Krittika is the third of the 27 nakshatras. It runs from 26 degrees 40 minutes of sidereal Aries to 10 degrees of sidereal Taurus, crossing the boundary between the two signs, and it is ruled by the Sun.

The deity and the symbol

Krittika belongs to Agni, the god of fire. This is the fire of the altar, the flame that purifies and transforms by burning away what should not stand. Its symbol is a flame, or a razor, and both are right. Krittika cuts cleanly.

It is also the nakshatra of the Pleiades, the little cluster of stars that Western astrology knows as Alcyone and the Western Fixed Stars page covers. In Indian tradition the Pleiades are the seven mothers who raised the god of war, and that detail matters. The mothering in Krittika is fierce, protective and not remotely sentimental.

The core signature

Your Moon sees through things. You notice what is false in a situation and what is unsound in a person, and you notice it early. It is the fire's own clarity, and it makes you very good at editing, critique, quality control and the sorting of what matters from what does not.

Your temperament has both signs in it. From Aries you get the spark to begin, and from Taurus the patience to stay. Most people have one or the other. You have both, and so you tend to finish what you start, and the finished thing has heat in it.

You carry the old mother energy of the Pleiades. You raise what needs raising and you cut away whatever threatens it, and you do not ask anyone's permission to do either.

The emotional life

Your feelings are direct. When you love, it burns. When you are angry, everyone can tell. You do not hide your weather behind a social smile, and people around you always know where you stand, which some find bracing and some find hard.

Your discrimination is sharp and it is reliable. You know which food suits your body, which people feed you and which drain you, which practices fit and which do not. Trust that. In my experience the Krittika Moon's instinct about what to let in is right far more often than it is wrong.

You go through cleansing phases. A clear out of the pantry, the friendship list, the wardrobe, the spiritual practice. You strip back to essentials and then build again, and that cycle is part of your nature.

Strengths

Your first strength is clear sight. What you say about a piece of work, a plan or a person tends to be accurate, and in a culture that fudges, accuracy is worth a great deal.

Your second is fierce protection. The children, the team, the project, the community under your care get defended, at cost to you if need be.

Your third is refinement. Whatever you turn your attention to comes out better. Editing, mentoring, craft, parenting, running a department. The Krittika touch upgrades the standard.

Challenges

The shadow is the sharp word. The same perception that serves clear judgement can tip into criticism delivered without mercy, and the razor that was meant to trim ends up wounding. A great many Krittika Moons have had to learn, the hard way, that being right is not the same as being helpful.

The second challenge is the fire turned inward. A running inner critic that never clocks off. Compassion for yourself is the counterweight, and it is a skill to be practised.

The third is the certainty that will not hear a challenge. Your judgement is usually sound. It is not always sound. Staying open to the possibility that you missed something is the mark of a mature Krittika.

In love and work

In love you need someone who can meet the fire without being burnt and without trying to put it out. You will not perform a softer version of yourself for long, and a partner who asks you to will lose you. Given a match who can take the heat, you are loyal, protective and more tender than anyone outside the relationship would guess.

At work you need an outlet for the edge. Editorial work, teaching, surgery, quality assurance, precision craft, anything that honours your ability to cut cleanly. Work that asks you to blunt your perception wears you down fast. You also need room for your protective streak, because in a team you will stand up for what is right and for the people under you, and an employer who suppresses that will find you gone.

The ruler's influence

The Sun rules Krittika, and the Sun is the planet of identity and of the light we bring. It gives this nakshatra its authority and its warmth, and it is also why Krittika people tend to be noticed whether they wanted to be or not. Anyone born with the Moon here begins life in a Sun period of the Vimshottari dasha, a short, bright six years, which The Dashas page explains.

Across the traditions

Krittika straddles sidereal Aries and sidereal Taurus, so both the Aries in Vedic Astrology and Taurus in Vedic Astrology pages on The Rashis apply, depending on which side of 30 degrees your Moon fell. The two zodiacs are about 24 degrees apart, which places this stretch of sky mostly in Western Taurus with the last few degrees spilling into Western Gemini. The Moon in the Signs page gives the Western reading, and the Alcyone entry on The Fixed Stars page gives the Pleiades.
