The Moon in the Signs
If the Sun is who you are becoming, the Moon is who you already are when nobody is watching.
What the Moon is in you
Feelings, needs, instinct and memory. The Moon describes how you react before you have had time to think, what makes you feel safe, how you were looked after as a child and how you look after people now. Most people recognise their Moon sign faster than their Sun sign once they know it, because the Moon is what is happening inside while the Sun is what is being presented.
In my experience the Moon is also where relationships live or die. Two people can have Suns that get along beautifully and Moons that do not, and they will be fine in public and fall apart at home. When a couple asks me what went wrong, I look at the two Moons first.
The Moon carries the mother as well, or whoever did the mothering, and the home you grew up in. A great deal of what people bring to me as "my anxiety" or "my temper" turns out to be a Moon doing exactly what its sign does, and giving it a name is often half the relief.
The Moon's cycle
The Moon is the fastest body in the chart. It goes round the whole zodiac in about 27.3 days and spends about two to two and a half days in each sign. From one New Moon to the next is about 29.5 days, a little longer, because the Sun has moved on in the meantime and the Moon has to catch it up. The Moon never retrogrades.
Because it moves about thirteen degrees a day, your Moon sign can depend on your birth time. If the Moon changed sign on the day you were born, the hour decides which Moon you have. The sign usually needs only a rough time. The house the Moon sits in needs the time to within about fifteen minutes, and "about 2 am" will not do for that.
This page is about the Moon's sign. The Moon page covers the phases, the New and Full Moons, the void of course Moon and eclipses, and the Your Birth Moon Phase page covers the phase you were born under, which is a separate thing from your sign.
Cancer and the Moon
The Moon rules Cancer. Cancer is its home, and a Cancer Moon is the lunar nature running at full strength. The Moon is said to be in its detriment in Capricorn, opposite Cancer, and in its fall in Scorpio. Both terms mean the same thing in practice: the Moon's wish for softness and easy comfort is harder to meet there. In my experience the same difficulty is what gives those two Moons their steadiness and their depth. A Capricorn Moon is the one you ring at three in the morning. A Scorpio Moon is the one who does not leave when things get ugly. Neither is a defect.
The Moon through the signs
In Aries, the Moon feels fast and feels loudly. The feeling arrives with a direction already attached, towards something or away from it, and it wants to be acted on now. An Aries Moon trusts anger said out loud far more than politeness that hides it. What it needs is movement and something to throw itself at. The work is the pause: the walk before the words, the night's sleep before the decision.
In Taurus, the Moon feels slowly and stays. Nothing arrives in a rush and nothing leaves in a rush, so it does not fall in or out of love in an afternoon. Safety is good food, a comfortable bed and people who will still be there tomorrow. The gift is durability, the person still standing when everyone else panics. The shadow is holding on past the point of use, because change costs this Moon dearly.
In Gemini, the Moon feels by talking. A feeling is not quite real to this Moon until it has been put into words, so it may need three conversations before it knows what it thinks. Good conversation soothes it; silence does not. The gift is naming what others cannot. The shadow is talking around a feeling instead of into it. Grief is the hard one, because grief asks you to stay in one place.
In Cancer, the Moon is at home and runs at full strength. This Moon feels deeply, reads a room before it has thought about it, and carries impressions long after everyone else has let go. It needs home, family and reliable closeness. The gift is real care, the kind that feeds and remembers. The shadow is attachment that will not release what is finished, and a mood that fills the house unnamed.
In Leo, the Moon feels warmly and in full view. When it loves you, you know, and when it is hurt, so does everyone. It needs to be seen and told it is loved, and a creative outlet, because a Leo Moon with nowhere to perform finds a stage in the family drama. The gift is making other people feel special. The shadow is pride that gets in the way of saying sorry.
In Virgo, the Moon feels by noticing. Its emotions arrive as observations and go straight into action: tidying, fixing, helping, improving. It is calmest when the kitchen is clean. The love is in the packed lunch and the spare socks in the car. The shadow is criticism, aimed at others and more fiercely at itself, and a nervous system that mistakes control for care. Kindness towards itself is the whole work.
In Libra, the Moon feels through relationship. It knows its own feelings best in the company of another person. Harmony keeps it safe, so raised voices settle into it as stress even when they belong to someone else. The gift is fairness, and a social grace that smooths every room it enters. The shadow is deferring to keep the peace until a quiet list of resentments has built up.
In Scorpio, the Moon feels intensely and privately. The Moon is in its fall here, and the same difficulty that denies it ease gives it depth. It needs truth and trust; a half truth feels less safe than a hard one. The gift is loyalty that does not flinch at grief or crisis. The shadow is control dressed as love, and a long memory for betrayal. The intensity needs somewhere to go.
In Sagittarius, the Moon holds the horizon close. It keeps returning to the belief that the next chapter will be worth reading. It needs meaning and movement, and suffocates in a routine with no larger story. The gift is optimism that lifts the whole house. The shadow is leaving before the feeling has finished, and turning grief into a lesson before it has been felt. Some of what it seeks lives only in stillness.
In Capricorn, the Moon feels privately and carefully. The Moon is in its detriment here, so softness does not come easily. Steadiness does. Safety comes from competence. Many Capricorn Moons were the serious child who worried about the family. The gift is being the one everyone calls when something real goes wrong. The shadow is earning love through usefulness and never quite believing it can be given for free.
In Aquarius, the Moon feels through ideas. It understands an emotion before it inhabits it, which looks like coolness and is a nervous system guarding its freedom. Space keeps this Moon safe, and a relationship that asks it to merge feels like a door closing. The gift is originality, and a friendship that accepts people as they are. The shadow is distance, a wall partners can feel but not see.
In Pisces, the Moon feels everything. It is the most porous of the twelve, picking up moods from a room or the evening news. Solitude, water, music and sleep are how it sorts the day's load, and without them it floods. The gift is compassion that does not need to fix anyone. The shadow is losing itself in someone else's reality, and reaching for whatever dissolves the pain. Boundaries are its lifelong practice.
Sun and Moon together
Read the two side by side. A Sun and Moon in the same element pull one way, and the person tends to be unmistakably what they are. A Sun in fire with a Moon in water, or a Sun in earth with a Moon in air, gives a person an inside that moves at a different speed from their outside, and bringing the two into one life is a fair part of their work. The first is simpler to live and the second is more interesting to read.
The Moon's house and aspects matter too. A Moon in the fourth house is a different animal from a Moon in the tenth, and a Moon in a tight square to Saturn feels its needs are rationed in a way a Moon trine Jupiter never will. The Houses page and The Aspects page carry those pieces.
Across the traditions
In the tarot the Moon belongs to The High Priestess, card 2 of the Major Arcana, who sits between the two pillars and keeps what she knows. The sign it rules, Cancer, belongs to The Chariot. Each card has its own page in The 78 Cards, and the links beside this page take you to them. The Vedic Astrology section, when it opens, will give the sidereal view, where the Moon carries even more weight than it does here.
What do you need, before anything else, to feel safe? Your Moon already knows.
