Ashwini
The starting gate. The horse already running while the rest of the field is still finding its footing.
Ashwini is the first of the 27 nakshatras. It runs from 0 to 13 degrees 20 minutes of sidereal Aries, and it is ruled by Ketu, the south node of the Moon. If your Moon was in that stretch of sky when you were born, this page is about you.
The deity and the symbol
Ashwini belongs to the Ashwini Kumaras, the twin horsemen of Indian myth who were physicians to the gods. They ride fast and they arrive in time. Their symbol is the head of a horse, which tells you most of what you need to know about the pace of this nakshatra.
Ketu as ruler adds something stranger. Ketu is the planet of release, of what has already been learned in some other life and does not need to be learned again. Under Ketu, healing can skip the usual steps. An Ashwini person often knows what a body or a situation needs without being able to say how they know. In my experience that instinct is reliable far more often than chance would allow.
The core signature
Your Moon moves quickly. When the chance comes, you take it. When something goes wrong, you are already up and moving while other people are still working out what happened. Hesitating is simply not your native setting.
You like a fresh start. New places, new projects, new chapters feed you, and a routine that has gone on too long begins to feel like a fence, however comfortable the paddock. Part of you is always looking for the first light of a day nobody has walked through yet.
You carry the healer's instinct. It does not have to come with a qualification. I have met Ashwini Moons who were nurses, paramedics and bodyworkers, and I have met others who were simply the person every stray animal and every struggling friend found their way to. The restoring impulse is in the nakshatra. The job title is optional.
The emotional life
Your feelings register fast. You know at once when something is right and when something is off, and you rarely need a second opinion. That speed is a gift in a crisis and a burden in a noisy room, where every signal arrives at full volume.
You recover quickly. A setback that would hold another placement down for a month has you moving again within days. The horses of Ashwini do not stay down, and that resilience is real.
The price of all this speed is restlessness. Even when life is good, a part of you keeps scanning the horizon for the next thing. Learning to be here, in this moment, with what is already in front of you, is the long practice of this nakshatra.
Strengths
You start well. Projects that needed someone to launch them find you. Emergencies that needed someone to act find you acting before the panic has set in. The world depends on starters, and you were built for it.
You heal fast, in yourself and in others. Your arrival, your touch, your few plain words make a difference people cannot quite explain afterwards.
You do not wait for permission. You can act on your own judgement without a committee behind you, and in a workplace or a family that has stalled, that independence gets things moving again.
Challenges
The shadow side of speed is the thing you did too fast. The commitment made in a rush, the relationship entered before you knew the person, the decision taken with half the information. These are the classic Ashwini mistakes, and most of them come from treating a pause as a weakness.
The second challenge is the love of beginnings becoming an avoidance of middles and endings. Many things started, few finished. Learning to stay, to see the dull middle stretch through to the end, is a large part of growing up under this nakshatra.
The third is impatience with slower people. What lands on you in an instant takes others time, and your sighing at their pace can wound. Different speeds are not wrong speeds.
In love and work
In love you fall fast and you show it. You are generous, direct and quick to forgive, and you need a partner who can keep up, or who at least does not mind being kept waiting at the top of the hill. The work is staying once the newness has worn off, because the newness always wears off, and what is left is the actual relationship.
At work you need room to move. A role that asks you to wait for sign off before acting will grind you down. You do best where your judgement is trusted and where there is a real possibility of change, even if you never take it. Any work with a healing or rescuing edge, formal or informal, uses the nakshatra well.
The ruler's influence
Ketu rules Ashwini, and Ketu is the planet of what is already finished. It gives this nakshatra a slightly other worldly quality under the speed. Ashwini people often feel they arrived knowing things, and often feel a little detached from the ordinary ladder of ambition. Ketu also makes the beginning of a life quite marked, because the Vimshottari dasha of anyone born with the Moon here begins in a Ketu period, which The Dashas page explains.
Across the traditions
Ashwini sits in sidereal Aries, so The Rashis page for Aries in Vedic Astrology is its home. Because the two zodiacs are about 24 degrees apart, the same stretch of sky falls in late Western Aries and the first few degrees of Western Taurus, so most Ashwini Moons will find their Western Moon in Aries or early Taurus. The Moon in the Signs page gives the Western reading, and I would read both before deciding which fits.
