The people and the world around you.
What this position asks
Who and what is around you in this?
This card sits second from the bottom of the staff. Waite wrote that "The EIGHTH CARD signifies his house", and explained that as "his environment and the tendencies at work therein which have an effect on the matter". Among his examples was "the influence of immediate friends".
His house is a good way to put it. Card 8 is family, work, friends, neighbours, the office, the group chat. It covers everyone who has a say in the matter, whether or not they were asked.
I think of a plant in a garden bed. You can water the plant all you like. If the soil is sour or the bed is in full shade, it will struggle, and if the soil is rich it will grow in spite of you.
How cards behave here
A Major Arcana card in the Environment says there is a large force around you. The culture of a workplace, the way a whole family works, the times you are living in. It is bigger than any one person.
A Minor card points to the everyday people and pressures around you. Cups in the Environment mean the feeling around you: support, affection, or moods you have to tiptoe around. Wands mean a busy, driven, competitive setting. Swords mean tension, opinions, gossip, arguments in the next room. Pentacles mean the practical setting: the workplace, the household budget, the physical space.
A court card here is more likely to be another person than anywhere else in the spread. Still ask first whether it describes a part of you. If it does not, ask who fits the description, and the answer usually comes quickly.
A reversed card in the Environment is most often blocked. The support is there and it is not reaching you, or the people around you are holding back something they could give. It can also be too much or too little involvement from others: the family that crowds you, or the friends who have gone quiet.
Its partner: the Approach
Card 8 is the world and card 7 is how you are meeting it. Read them together and you see the fit, or the lack of it.
Imagine the Knight of Cups in the Environment, a rider carrying a cup out in front of him. Someone is arriving with an offer, often an emotional or romantic one. With the Eight of Swords in the Approach, a figure bound and blindfolded among swords, you feel too hemmed in to accept it, though the bindings are looser than they look. With the Ace of Swords in the Approach, you see the offer clearly and can say yes or no with confidence.
A few examples
The Three of Cups in the Environment: three women raising their cups together. Friends, celebration, people who are on your side.
The King of Swords in the Environment: an authority figure with a clear head. A lawyer, a doctor, a manager, someone whose judgment will carry weight.
The Emperor in the Environment: structure, rules, a boss or a father figure. The setting has firm walls, and you will need to work within them or negotiate with whoever built them.
When this position speaks
Card 8 reminds you that you are not doing this alone, for better or worse. When the Approach looks right and things still are not moving, look here.
Who is in the garden bed with you, and what are they feeding?
