Seven of Wands tarot card, Rider Waite Smith deck

Standing your ground when everyone comes at you.

The picture

A young man stands on a small rise holding a wand across his body with both hands. Six more wands rise up from below towards him, and we cannot see who holds them. He wears a green tunic, with a shoe on one foot and a boot on the other.

Upright

Seven asks you to stop and weigh things up. In Wands that reassessment happens under pressure. You have something worth defending, and now you have to decide whether you will.

This is the card of holding your position. A boundary, a belief, a piece of work you stand behind, and plenty of people pushing back. He has the high ground, and the high ground counts for a lot. He answers the wands one at a time, which is the only way anyone holds a hill.

The odd shoes are worth noticing. He was not ready for this. He grabbed what he could and stood up anyway. Sometimes that is how courage looks: underprepared, a little off balance, and still standing.

Upright, the Seven says you can hold this. Keep your footing, and keep the ground you have already won.

Reversed

Reversed, the defender tires. I read this as too much or too little. Too little, and you give way on something that matters to you just to make the pushing stop. Too much, and you defend every point as though your life depended on it, including the ones not worth the fight.

To tell which, look at what you are defending. If it matters, find your footing. If it is pride, you are allowed to put the wand down. You usually know which one it is the moment you ask.

When it turns up

What are you defending, and is it worth the ground you are standing on?
