Ten of Pentacles tarot card, Rider Waite Smith deck

What lasts. Family, home and what gets handed down.

The picture

An old man with white hair sits in a richly patterned cloak near an archway, with two white dogs beside him. Beyond the arch, a man and a woman stand together, and a small child reaches out towards one of the dogs. A coat of arms hangs on the arch, a tower rises behind the family, and ten pentacles are laid across the whole scene.

Upright

Ten is completion, a cycle closing so a new one can open. In Pentacles, it is what outlives you: family, inheritance, the home that holds several generations, security that has settled so deeply nobody needs to count it any more.

Three generations share this picture. The grandfather at the gate, the couple in their working years, the child just arriving. Wealth here includes the name, the house, the dogs and the stories as well as the money.

Notice that nobody in the picture is looking at the pentacles. They are simply the ground everyone stands on. That is what lasting security feels like. And if you are building something now, the card asks who will stand on it after you.

Reversed

Reversed, I read this as blocked, or too much. Blocked is trouble in the family line: arguments over a will, money that divides people, a family business nobody wants to take on. Too much is the weight of it, tradition and expectation pressing so hard that there is no room to be yourself.

To tell which, ask whether the problem is with the inheritance or with the people. If it is about who gets what, it is blocked. If it is about who you are allowed to be, it is too much.

When it turns up

What do you want to leave behind that has nothing to do with money?
