Relationships and Guidance
The Flow
Have you ever been so caught up in something that you looked up and hours had gone without you noticing?
No clock. No worry. No chatter in your head. Just you and the thing you were doing, and a quiet sort of joy running underneath it.
That state has a name. It is called the Flow, and plenty of people call it being in the Zone. It is one of the most natural doorways to spirit we have, and almost everyone has walked through it without realising what it was.
What the Flow is
The Flow is a state where you are so involved in what you are doing that nothing else seems to matter.
Your mind is so focused on the task that there is no room left for Monkey Mind to interrupt you. Monkey Mind is my name for all the random mental noise, the doubts, the second guessing, the running commentary that sits in the background of most of our waking hours. The Monkey Mind page goes into it properly. In the Flow, it goes quiet.
And when it goes quiet, problems seem to fade away. They are still there. They have simply stopped shouting.
It is a state of intense productivity and creativity, and it feels three ways at once.
Timeless, because the clock disappears and hours pass as if they do not exist.
Selfless, because you stop watching yourself, stop managing how you look and what you should be doing next.
Effortless, because you are no longer pushing. You are being carried.
It is one of the states in which we touch the highest kind of bliss a human being can feel.
You have already been there
Each of you will have experienced this at some time in your life, and many of you will have been there more times than you can count.
Maybe it was painting, or playing music, or gardening with your hands in the soil. Maybe it was deep in a piece of work, or out on a surfboard, or cooking. Maybe it was a conversation that went somewhere real, or holding a sleeping child and forgetting there was anywhere else to be.
Whatever it was, your soul knows the feeling and your body remembers it. That memory is what you are going to use.
The practice
This is the exercise I first set out back in 2020, and it is very simple.
- Think back to a time you were in the Zone. Pick one moment, the clearer the better.
- Write it down. Journal what you were doing, where you were, and above all how it felt in your body.
- Close your eyes and relive it. Stay with it until you can feel that timeless, effortless quality again, here, now.
- Then open your eyes and bring that feeling into whatever you are doing at this moment, regardless of what it is.
That last step is where the change happens. Bringing that heightened state of awareness into your now turns the now into the Zone.
The washing up.
The drive to work.
The email you have been putting off since Tuesday.
The more you practise this, the more it becomes your normal way of moving through a day, rather than a rare accident that happens to you now and then.
Chop wood, carry water. The ordinary task, done with your whole presence, is the practice.
People ask me all the time how to become more spiritual. The answer is to live it. Spirituality becomes so much a part of your every day that you cannot tell whether you merged with it or it merged with you. It is with you from the moment you wake to the moment you go to sleep, and even in your dreams. Bringing the Flow into the ordinary hours is one of the plainest ways I know of doing that.
Why it belongs with guidance
This page sits with guides and signposts for a reason.
The quieter Monkey Mind gets, the more you notice something else slipping in alongside the Flow. Your intuition. Your guidance. The gentle nudges that only ever reach you when the noise dies down.
As you grow, you find a new language inside you. It is the language of spirit, the language of the senses, and it needs none of the words you grew up with. It can tell you in seconds things that might take you years to explain to someone else. It will guide you, it will protect you, and it will help you reach the heights of your growth.
The Flow is you, fully here, with the channel open.
You can see this in the way I teach other things. When you go to meet your guide, I ask you to clear your mind and then allow the information to flow. When you are learning to read people, I tell you to have no preconceived ideas, never try to interpret, and simply go with the flow of the impressions you get. The Reading People page has the practice that goes with that, reading the faces in the cars coming towards you, where there is no time for Monkey Mind to get a word in.
It is the same state each time. You get out of the way and let it come.
The Flow and the Mind Switch
You have two minds. The human mind, built for you layer by layer from the day you were born, which is where Monkey Mind lives. And the soul mind you arrived with, the quiet knowing underneath the noise.
I call the deliberate act of moving from the first to the second the Mind Switch, and I wrote about it on 26 July 2026. Every time you are in the Flow, that switch has already flipped itself. Notice how that feels.
That feeling is home.
Where meditation comes in
Daily meditation is the foundation for this, as it is for everything else. Half an hour a day, and there is no shortcut around it. Monkey Mind quietens when it is given stillness regularly. The Thirty Minutes a Day page is where I set that up.
So this week, catch yourself in the Zone, and then practise bringing it everywhere else.
When was the last time you completely lost track of time doing something you loved?
