That is the whole rule.

Why you need it

All of us get stuck in life from time to time.

Sometimes we are confused about which path is the right one. Sometimes we know perfectly well which path is right, and we hesitate to take the step because of fear or any of the million other reasons life throws at us.

Two things are a given. You have guides who can help you with your path, your learning and your growth. And if you ask for guidance with a real desire for it, it WILL come to you.

One of the most fun ways to ask is the Three Source Rule.

How to do it

  1. Pick your question.
  2. Ask your guides for a sign, and ask for it to come to you three times.
  3. If you want, set a time limit. You can even specify that it needs to happen the same day.
  4. Then let it go.

The Letting Go and Control page in the meditation area has more on the letting go.

The Fremantle example

Say you are wondering whether you should travel to Fremantle tomorrow to meet some new spiritual contacts. (If you do not live in Western Australia, pick a town near you. Fremantle will forgive you.)

You ask your guides for a sign three times, and you let it go.

If you are meant to go, you will come across three independent sources mentioning Fremantle. One might be an advertisement on the radio. One might be a chance phone call from a friend who talks about Fremantle. One might be a truck going past with Fremantle written on the side.

Independent is the important word. The radio, the friend and the truck have nothing to do with each other.

Three independent sources. Go to Fremantle.

I could list examples like this for ages. You get the point.

The rule without asking

You do not always have to ask first.

Signposts arrive all the time, and the Signs and Signposts page is about learning to notice them. You look for consistent messages. When the same message comes to you from three independent directions, a song, a conversation overheard, a book, the same rule applies. It is time to act.

Ignore it and it does not go away. It starts as a whisper and gets louder, which the Life Lessons page follows all the way to thermonuclear.

Testing what you believe

The rule is for beliefs as well as decisions.

It is healthy to test all of your spiritual beliefs on a regular basis. Learn from as many sources as you can, because no one source has everything for you, and it is balanced and healthy to hear and learn other ideas. You will not resonate with all of it. You are not meant to. Take what you connect with and discard the rest.

Then look for confirmation. Ask the universe to verify it to you from three independent sources. I was reminded of that one night, and it is as basic as it is important. After a lifetime of learning and teaching I still practise the basics to this day. It keeps you grounded, and it helps to cement your abilities.

Sometimes a belief you test will turn out to be a dead end path. That is ok. It is all part of the learning. When you see a path is not for you, acknowledge the lesson and close that door, and smile that you saw this path was not for you.

Two companions

Two other quick tools sit alongside it, for different kinds of question.

When the question is really about what you want, toss a coin. Pick a question that can only have two answers, a yes or a no, an up or a down, a stop or a go, and give one to heads and the other to tails. Flip the coin. BEFORE you look at the outcome, you will have had a gut reaction to one of the outcomes. That is your true answer. It shows you what you really want. The outcome of the coin is irrelevant.

When you are looking for an answer and want words, pick up a random book, close your eyes and hold your question in your mind. While you hold it, open the book to any page and read the first thing in front of you. You will often find the guidance you were looking for. Leave the dictionary, the phone book and the recipe books on the shelf. Baking scones is hard to interpret.

Trusting what you get

The hardest part of all of this is the same as with any guidance. You have to act on it.

All of us, me included, have been given guidance we knew we should listen to, and then justified why we should not. The Your Guides page has the story of the truck at the intersection, which is the clearest picture I have of why the listening matters.

Try it this week with something small. Ask, let it go, and count.
