We are in the Month of the Rooster.
It began on 7 September and runs through to 8 October.
For anyone new to this, the Chinese calendar gives every month an animal, the same twelve that run the years. So while 2026 is the year of the Fire Horse, right now we are living inside a Rooster month, and the two of them mix.
The Rooster is the one who crows at dawn.
Notice what that actually means. He does not ask whether anybody wants to be awake. He announces.
Rooster energy is precise, orderly, early, and completely unembarrassed about saying the thing out loud. It notices the detail everyone else walked straight past. It likes a list, a system, a clean bench and a job finished properly.
And coming out of a Monkey month, which was all cleverness and improvising, the change of gear is noticeable. The Monkey finds the shortcut. The Rooster does it properly.
Here is why the timing is so neat this year.
The Rooster month sits almost exactly over Virgo season, and those two speak the same language. Order, detail, useful work, the small thing done well.
Add September being a 1 month in a 1 year, still saying begin, and you get a very specific instruction.
Begin tidily.
Whatever you started at the New Moon, this is the month to give it a structure so it survives past your enthusiasm.
So, the practical use of a Rooster month.
Do the admin you have been avoiding. Sort the drawer, the inbox, the paperwork, the thing in the ugly envelope. Get the details right on whatever you are building. And say the plain true thing you have been dressing up.
Roosters are not famous for tact, but they are famous for honesty, and there is a version of that which is a real gift.
Now the shadow, because every animal has one.
The Rooster’s sharp eye is wonderful pointed at a task and painful pointed at a person. If you catch yourself fault finding this month, in yourself or in someone you love, that is the Rooster gone sour.
Point the eye at the work.
And a last note for the Fire Horse year we are in. The Horse gallops. The Rooster keeps the books.
Between now and 8 October you have both available, so use the momentum and let the Rooster make it count.
What have you been avoiding that a Rooster month could sort out in an afternoon?
