Venus Lines
Venus is the part of the chart that loves, enjoys and makes things beautiful, the part that wants life to be pleasant and the people in it to be kind.
Its four lines are the pleasant places on your map.
Wherever a Venus line runs, people warm to you, life softens around the edges, and good things come without the usual effort.
That is exactly the trouble with them.
Venus lines are the ones nobody complains about, and the ones where I most often see a life go comfortable and stay there, so I read them with one eyebrow up.
The Ascendant line
Your Venus Ascendant line runs through the places where Venus was rising at your birth.
Here Venus sits on your face.
You seem more attractive, more graceful and easier to like, your manner softens, and people respond with a warmth you did not have to earn.
Others want to be near you and to do things for you, simply because being around you feels good.
Any hardness in how you come across tends to lift in these places.
The gift is popularity and the ease that comes with it: help offered freely, doors opened by people who want to help, friends and useful contacts made without trying, and a body that feels more at home in itself.
It suits careers in beauty, design, hospitality, entertainment and any work where charm is part of the job.
The challenge is being liked for the wrapping.
Put squarely: charm winning out over substance, wanting to be liked more than wanting to be yourself, people who love the surface and never look past it, vanity, charm used to get your way, and a serious idea dismissed because you are seen as decorative.
Use this place to launch creative work, to begin a relationship that matters, or to settle into a role where being liked is a real asset.
The practice is to build substance to match the shine, so that who you are stands up when the charm wears off, and to choose carefully who you let close.
Not everyone who is drawn to you here wants all of you.
The Descendant line
Your Venus Descendant line runs through the places where Venus was setting when you were born.
Here Venus shows up in the people you meet.
You draw charming, sociable people who love beauty and comfort, who want affection without drama, and who often work in the arts, design, beauty or hospitality.
The chemistry comes quickly and feels mutual and easy, and time together feels like a pleasure.
The gift is affectionate partnership: people who admire you and show it, who want you to be happy, who bring romance and physical warmth to a relationship, and with whom you feel wanted without having to prove anything.
A partner here tends to support your creative side and your taste for the finer things.
The challenge is choosing by the surface.
Watch for partners picked on attraction alone, relationships kept pleasant at the cost of truth, conflict avoided until the real problem has grown roots under the floorboards, and people drawn to your looks who never meet the rest of you.
Use this place for deepening a relationship you already value, for a romantic fresh start, or for building a partnership on affection and mutual appreciation.
Choose on shared values and let the attraction come second, which is harder than it sounds in a place like this.
Let the relationship grow down below the charm into understanding and commitment.
A Venus Descendant line gives you lovely company; whether the company is good for you is a question only you can answer.
The Midheaven line
Your Venus Midheaven line is the line of longitude where Venus stood directly overhead at your birth.
Here Venus goes public.
Your career attaches itself to beauty, harmony and the skill of making people feel valued, and you advance through relationships and referrals because people enjoy working with you and say so.
Your reputation rests on integrity and warmth as much as on the work itself.
The gift is real for creative fields, design, the arts, entertainment, hospitality and any trade where relationships and taste are the product.
The work satisfies because it matches your values, people pay well for it because it is a pleasure to receive, and leadership comes through caring for your team.
The challenge is being underestimated and staying quiet about it.
It looks like this: being seen as purely decorative, choosing harmony over a hard truth, dodging a decision because it might upset someone, failing to give plain feedback or hold a boundary, generosity used up by people who give nothing back, and money that arrives with a sense of not deserving it.
Use this place to launch a creative career, to start a business built on beauty or taste, or for a stretch of professional growth in a trade that values relationships.
Build the substance and the backbone to match the charm.
Learn to say the awkward thing kindly and early, because a Venus Midheaven place will give you every excuse to leave it unsaid.
The IC line
Your Venus IC line is the line of longitude opposite your Midheaven line, where Venus was directly underfoot when you were born.
Here Venus goes home.
The house becomes beautiful, because you will spend the time and money to make it so, family affection flows more freely, and you feel welcomed by your own people without having to earn it.
Old wounds with parents around love and acceptance tend to soften in these places, and money for home and property seems to arrive when it is needed.
The gift is a home that people come to because they want to be there, family rituals that are a pleasure, and a pull towards gardening, cooking, decorating and the other domestic arts that make a place feel loved.
The challenge is a beautiful house with an unresolved family inside it.
It looks like this: beauty and comfort used to avoid the real conversation, a family that looks lovely and never talks, too much weight on how the home presents, and an identity tied too tightly to the house and its furnishings.
Use this place for buying property, for putting down roots, or for deepening family relationships while making a home that supports everyone in it.
Have the hard family conversation anyway.
A beautiful room is a wonderful place to tell the truth in, and in a Venus IC place you will have to choose to use it that way.
How I read these lines
A Venus line follows the Venus in your birth chart.
A well placed Venus, in a sign it likes with gentle aspects, gives lines that are warm and easy; a Venus under pressure, say square Saturn or conjunct Pluto, gives lines where the pleasure arrives with a hook in it, and the reading says so.
I read the nearest lines against the whole chart, Venus's sign, house and aspects, and I give the distance to the line, because a Venus line a thousand kilometres away is a rumour of pleasantness, no more.
The line people ask me about most is the Descendant, almost always with someone's name attached to the question.
The one I raise myself is the Midheaven, because it is the line that quietly rewards the work people enjoy, and most of us need permission to believe that.
Across the traditions
Venus has its own page in The Planets, which carries it through the twelve signs and its rulership of Taurus and Libra, and The Empress in The 78 Cards is its card.
The Grahas page in the Vedic Astrology section gives the sidereal view of Venus as Shukra.
Which place in the world has treated you most kindly, and did you ever ask what it wanted from you in return?
