Tarot Birth Cards
The Star as a Birth Card
The Star is card 17 of the Major Arcana. You land on it when the eight digits of your date of birth add up to exactly 17, since a total over 22 never reduces this far. Someone born on 15 June 2003 adds 1 + 5 + 0 + 6 + 2 + 0 + 0 + 3 and gets 17. So does someone born on 6 August 2001: 0 + 6 + 0 + 8 + 2 + 0 + 0 + 1. Then 17 has two digits, so you add them once more, 1 + 7 = 8, and your second card is Strength.
The Star is the card I am happiest to see in anyone's hand, and I have watched people light up when they find out it is theirs from birth. It carries a responsibility with it, though, and that is what this page is for.
Your life's archetype
The Star is the first calm after The Tower. A figure kneels at the water and pours without hurry, and the sky above is full of light. As a birth card, it says you are here to keep hope alive, to hold a picture of what is possible when everyone else has given up on it, and to show by your own living that being connected to something larger carries you through the dark.
You are the visionary. You see beauty in circumstances other people call merely hard, and you help them find their way back to meaning. The teaching of your life is to let your light be seen without turning it down to make the room comfortable, and to show others that their own particular flavour of gift is wanted too.
Who you are
You have a hope that does not switch off, even in a bad year. You notice meaning and beauty in ordinary days. You have a strong sense that you are here for a reason, and you may still be working out what the reason is, which is fine.
You tend to feel guided. Coincidences line up, doors open, the right person rings on the right day, especially when you are moving in the direction you know to be yours. You are an idealist, drawn to causes bigger than your own gain, and your spiritual side is right at the front of your nature. Hope, inspiration, meaning and the sharing of your own gifts are the themes you keep returning to.
The shadow
Every light throws a shadow, and the shadow of The Star is a sweet one, which makes it easy to miss.
It shows up as wide eyed trust that walks straight past a real danger. As the belief that hope alone will fix a situation that also needs a phone call and a plan. As disappointment so heavy, when the world does not match the vision, that you want to stop looking. As a vision admired for years and never built. And, quietly, as a subtle spiritual superiority, the sense that your connection to meaning is a notch above everyone else's.
The work is grounding. Keep the vision and add the boots. Be gentle with the people whose hope does not come as naturally as yours.
In love and at work
In love you are an inspiring presence. You help a partner believe in what they could be. You struggle with the mundane end of a relationship, the bins and the bills, and with a partner who does not share your sense of meaning. You do best with someone who backs your way of being in the world and can hold your idealism without constantly asking you to be more practical.
At work you belong where creativity, meaning and service meet: art, music, counselling, coaching, activism, spiritual work, anything that adds beauty or purpose to the world. You do your best in places that value purpose alongside output, and you are most satisfied when the work lets you be fully yourself and lifts other people as it goes.
What you are here to learn
The lesson of this card is that hope with its feet on the ground is far stronger than hope floating above it. A vision becomes real through the practical steps, and the steps are not beneath you.
You are learning to tell guidance from wishful thinking, and inspiration that grows you from escape wearing spiritual clothes. You are learning that your gifts are meant to be shared in a form grounded enough to be of use, and that being fully yourself does not require flooding the room. And you are learning restraint: other people's lack of hope is not a failing, and meeting them where they are sometimes means putting the inspiring speech away.
The cards that share your number
In the way I count, 17 belongs with 8, so The Star and Strength always travel together. Everyone with The Star as a first card has Strength as a second. A date that adds straight to 8 gives Strength alone, and I do not add a companion to a single digit, though other books count differently.
The pair is the vision and the quiet courage that carries it. Strength is the woman with her hand on the lion, patience and gentleness with real power behind them. The Star without Strength drifts. Strength without The Star has nowhere to go. You were handed both, which tells you the work: hope, and then the steady daily doing of it.
The cards either side
In the deck, The Star sits between The Tower and The Moon. The Tower cleared away the false picture so a true vision could appear, and The Moon is the mystery you still have to walk through to reach it. The Star sits between them as the clear sky after the storm and before the long night.
Across the traditions
The Star has its own page in The 78 Cards, which reads it as it turns up in a spread. The number it reduces to is 8, and The Number 8 page in the Numerology section describes power, management and the building of something lasting, which is exactly the grounding this card needs. In astrology The Star belongs to Aquarius, the sign of the visionary and the friend of humanity, ruled by Uranus, and the Aquarius page in the Western Astrology section fills that out.
The two systems count a birth date differently on purpose. The Life Path reduces each part of the date on its own so a Master Number is kept, and the birth card adds the whole date as one string. They give different information, and both belong in a full portrait.
What is the vision you have been carrying for years, and what is the first small practical step towards it?
