There is an oddity in this card. In the way I count, you never reach The Magician first. A date whose digits add straight to 1 does not exist, and no total over 22 reduces to 1 either. You arrive at him through the Wheel of Fortune, or through The Sun. A birth on 9 September 1999 adds to 0 + 9 + 0 + 9 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 9 = 46, then 4 + 6 = 10, the Wheel of Fortune, then 1 + 0 = 1, The Magician. A birth on 17 January 2008 adds to 1 + 7 + 0 + 1 + 2 + 0 + 0 + 8 = 19, The Sun, then 10 the Wheel, then 1 The Magician. Three cards.

So The Magician is always the card at the bottom of your stack, the one everything else reduces to, and I find that fitting. He is where the whole constellation finally gets pointed at something.

Your life's archetype

If The Magician is among your birth cards, you are here to make things happen on purpose. Thought becomes word, word becomes action, action becomes something you can hold in your hand, and you are here to show that chain can be worked deliberately.

The Magician stands at his table with all four suits laid out, a wand, a cup, a sword and a coin, and one hand raised to the sky and one pointed at the earth. He has everything he needs, and the card turns on his using it. The people who carry it are the ones who, when a room is still debating, have already quietly started.

You ARE the ADMIN of your LIFE is a line I have used for years, and this is its card.

Who you are

You can concentrate in a way other people find remarkable. Your attention, once it lands, stays where you put it. You are resourceful and quick, good with words and with learning, comfortable with technology and systems whatever your field.

Your ambition is the real kind. You are after the feeling of a capability finally used, a vision finally standing in the world. Each hard thing you get through leaves you more able than the last. Your spirituality is practical, more interested in how the universe works when you lean on it than in what it is.

Will, skill, conscious making and the practical use of your gifts. That is the theme.

The shadow

The shadow of The Magician is the trick. The gifts that let you shape outcomes let you shape people, and the line between persuading and manipulating is thin. When the goal matters more than the person in front of you, you have crossed it.

Without discipline the focus scatters into eleven half finished projects, each with an excellent explanation. There is pride in this card too, a quiet belief that your will and your intellect are enough on their own and that nothing larger needs consulting.

The work is to notice when you are forcing. Force is the tell that you have lost the thread of what you were actually making.

In love and at work

In love you can be a steadying presence and a real inspiration, the partner who encourages the people you love to find their own power. The trouble is surrender. Intimacy is messy and you prefer the controls. The relationships that work for you are with people who respect your ambition and your independence and do not need you to shrink your purpose to feel safe.

At work you want to see the result of what you did. Clear goals, projects with an end, teaching, writing, building, selling, business for yourself, technical fields, any role that rewards thinking strategically and then acting. Your satisfaction comes from the finished thing you can point to and say, I made that.

What you are here to learn

That control is the smallest kind of power. The deepest power the Magician has is to line up his will with something larger than himself and let that do the heavy lifting.

You are learning that the cleanest manifesting comes from clear intention held lightly, and that gripping the outcome strangles it. You are learning that your gift with words can serve connection and understanding as well as your agenda. And you are learning that what you can do alone is the smaller part of what you can do, because inspiring, teaching and working with others multiplies it. Knowing when to act and when to allow is the whole of the lesson.

The cards that share your number

The Magician shares the number 1 with the Wheel of Fortune and The Sun. A total that lands on 10 gives the Wheel and then The Magician, two cards. A total of 19 gives The Sun, then the Wheel, then The Magician, three cards, the only three card set in the deck. In the way I count there is no single card Magician. Other books count differently and some will tell you otherwise.

Read your cards downward from the one you landed on. The Wheel turns and brings the season, The Sun lights it, and The Magician is the one who picks up the tools and does something with the moment. The question your life keeps asking is whether you will wait for the Wheel or work with it.

The cards either side

In the deck The Magician sits between The Fool and The High Priestess, and the library pairs him with The Fool and the Wheel of Fortune as a trio of initiation. The Fool's faith becomes The Magician's focused act, under the Wheel's larger timing. Those are the neighbours in the deck, a way of reading the card, and your birth cards are the ones under The cards that share your number above.

Across the traditions

The Magician has its own page in The 78 Cards, which reads it as a card in a spread. In numerology its number is the 1, the beginner and pioneer, and The Number 1 page walks through how that number reads as a Life Path, a Destiny and a Personal Year. In Western astrology the card belongs to Mercury, the planet of the mind, the message and the quick hand, and the Mercury page in the Western Astrology section follows that planet through the signs. The Tarot Card of the Week post is a shorter companion read when this card comes round.
