Runes
Kenaz
Kenaz is the sixth rune of the Elder Futhark, the sixth in the first aett, and its sound is K.
The shape is two strokes meeting at a point on the left and opening out to the right, like a chevron lying on its side, or the angle of a flame leaning in the wind.
The word means the torch, and the picture is knowledge, craft, the light of understanding and the fire you work with.
The picture
There are two kinds of fire in the old alphabet.
Later on you will meet the hail and the ice and the great sun, the weather that happens to you.
Kenaz is the other kind.
It is the fire you made.
A torch is a stick of pitch pine somebody cut and lit on purpose, and it does two jobs.
It lights the way in the dark and it heats the forge.
That is the whole of the rune, I think.
Light to see by and heat to work with.
On the seeing side it is knowledge, the moment the room lights up and you understand a thing you did not understand a minute ago.
On the working side it is craft, the skill in the hands, the fire that softens iron so it can be shaped.
The smith was half a magician to the old people, because he took rock and made it into a blade, and the torch rune belongs to him.
I like that the two sides sit together, because I do not believe in knowledge that does not do anything.
A torch you carry around admiring is a waste of a good stick.
Kenaz is the understanding that gets used.
It is the apprentice's first year, when everything is new and the hands are learning what the head already knows.
It is the woman at the kitchen table who has worked out how the family budget actually works and is now going to do something about it.
It is the small flame of a good idea, kept out of the wind until it is strong enough to stand on its own.
When it comes up
When Kenaz comes up I read it as a light going on.
Something you did not know, you are about to know.
A problem that has sat in the dark for months is going to show its edges.
The rune is a friendly one, I think, one of the warmer ones in the bag.
It says understanding is available and the only thing you have to do is look where the torch is pointing.
It also says make something.
Kenaz is the craft rune, and when it lands in a reading about a stuck patch I will usually ask what the person has made lately with their own hands and finished.
A meal from scratch, a shelf, a garden bed, a page of writing.
The fire that works iron also works on moods, and there is nothing like a finished thing on the bench for burning off a fog.
Stand in it by learning on purpose.
Pick up the skill you have been meaning to learn.
Ask the question you have been too proud to ask.
Read the manual.
If you already know the thing, teach it to someone, because a torch lights other torches without losing any of its own flame, and that is the oldest lesson in the alphabet.
If the question was about a relationship, Kenaz says you are about to see the other person more clearly, and it will be worth the look.
If the question was about health, it points at knowledge: get the test, read the result, understand what is going on in there.
Reversed
Kenaz reversed, the point facing right, reads as the torch gone out.
Confusion, a loss of direction, a creative block, a skill grown rusty for want of use.
It can also show a false light, the person who thinks they understand and does not, or a flame that has stopped being warmth and started being a fire hazard.
When it lands this way up I ask what you have stopped learning and when you last made anything.
The fix is nearly always to light a very small fire and tend it.
One page.
One shelf.
The big light comes back from small ones.
Across the traditions
I put Kenaz beside The Hermit in the tarot, the lantern held out ahead of the feet, the light that shows one step at a time and no more.
That is my own association and nothing stronger.
The Number 6 page in the Numerology section reads the same count as the number of the home and the maker, which sits well beside the torch, and The Ogham and the Tree Calendar page is another old alphabet of the north read as pictures, if you want to follow the idea into a second set of letters.
What have you understood lately that you have not yet done anything with?
