The picture

Ice is water that has decided to stop.
Nothing flows, nothing grows, nothing is wasted either.
Everything under the surface is held exactly where it was when the cold came, and it will stay held until the cold goes.

We do not get much ice in Perth, so the picture takes a moment of imagination here.
Think of the freezer drawer that has not been defrosted in a year, the chop you cannot get out without a knife.
Or think of a frozen lake in a film, flat and white and silent, and a person standing on the bank wondering if it will hold them.
That second picture is the one I keep coming back to.
Ice is a surface you can walk on, and it is also a surface you can go through.
The rune carries both and does not tell you in advance which one you are standing on.

The single upright stroke says something too.
One line. No branches, no movement, no direction.
Isa is the rune of the pause so complete that even the letter has stopped doing anything.

When it comes up

When Isa comes out of the bag I read it as a standstill.
Something that was moving has stopped, or something you want to move will not.
The job application that sits in silence. The relationship where nobody is saying anything. The project frozen while someone else decides.
It is a frustrating rune to draw, and the frustration is usually the first thing to deal with.

The guidance in the picture is to stop pushing.
You cannot thaw a lake by shouting at it.
Isa is a time for stillness, and I mean actual stillness, the kind where you sit and do nothing about the thing for a while.
Winter does its own work under the ice.
Roots rest. Seeds wait. The ground is doing something, it is simply doing it where you cannot see.
I think the people who use an Isa patch well are the ones who treat it as a rest they did not ask for and take it anyway.

The second piece of guidance is about the thin surface.
A standstill can feel solid.
The silence in a relationship can look like peace. The frozen plan can look stable.
Test the ice before you put your weight on it.
Ask the plain question you have been avoiding, and listen for the crack.
Better to hear it from the bank than from the middle of the lake.

The third piece is the one people least want to hear.
Ice has its own timetable.
You will know the thaw has come when it comes, and until then the most useful thing you can do is keep warm, keep your routines, and stop checking the surface every ten minutes.
A watched lake does not melt any faster.

Be still. Be patient. Keep one eye on the surface.

Reversed

Isa looks the same either way up, so it has no reversed position.
Its hard side shows in the runes around it.
Beside Hagalaz or Nauthiz the freeze is a hard one and the thaw is a long way off.
Beside Sowilo, Dagaz or Jera the ice is already softening and the pause is nearly over.
Beside Fehu, look at money that has stopped moving; beside Ehwaz or Gebo, at a partnership that has gone quiet.

Across the traditions

In the tarot I set Isa beside The Hanged Man, the figure suspended upside down and strangely calm about it, waiting for the view to change.
That is my own association and nothing stronger.
The Hanged Man has its own page in The 78 Cards.
The How to Cast the Runes page explains why I leave face down runes unread, which is its own small lesson in letting things lie.

What in your life has frozen, and are you sure the surface will hold you?
