Runes
Nauthiz
Nauthiz is the tenth rune of the Elder Futhark and the second of Hagal's aett.
Its sound is N.
The shape is an upright stroke crossed by a shorter stroke slanting across it, like two sticks rubbed together to start a fire.
The word means need.
The picture
Need is an uncomfortable word and the old carvers did not soften it.
Nauthiz is the cold night with not enough wood.
It is the long week before the pay comes in.
It is the thing you have to do and would give a great deal to avoid.
The two crossed sticks are the key to the picture.
Rub them together and you get friction, and friction is unpleasant, and friction is also how a fire starts when you have no other way.
The old meaning carries both halves.
There is a lack, and the lack presses on you, and the pressing is what finally gets you moving.
I doubt that much worth doing has ever begun from comfort.
It begins from a need that would not go away.
In ordinary Perth terms, Nauthiz is the budget that will not stretch, the deadline that will not shift, the body that says no when the diary says yes.
It is the moment you realise the easy option has quietly left the building.
What is left is the necessary option, and that is the only one on the table.
When it comes up
When Nauthiz comes out of the bag I read it as a constraint that is real.
Something is short. Time, money, energy, patience, help.
The rune does not pretend otherwise and I would not either.
The first piece of guidance is to name the shortage plainly.
Most of the misery of a Nauthiz patch comes from pretending there is no shortage while behaving as if there is.
The second piece is about where to put your effort.
Nauthiz is a poor time to want more.
It is a good time to want less and to look hard at what is actually needed to get through.
Strip the week back to the three things that matter.
Let the rest wait, and notice how much of the rest was never necessary at all.
The third piece is the fire.
Friction makes heat.
The need you are sitting in is teaching you something you would not have learned with a full woodpile, and I say that without any wish to make a hard time sound pretty.
It is simply what need does.
People who have been through a Nauthiz season come out of it knowing what they can live without, and that is a kind of wealth the fat years never give you.
A practical note.
Nauthiz is also the rune of asking for help, because need is what finally makes most of us do it.
If the shortage is real and you have been carrying it alone, this is the rune that says put the pride down and make the call.
The old people did not get through a hard winter by themselves and neither will you.
Do the necessary thing. Do it slowly if you have to. Keep rubbing the sticks.
Reversed
Readers argue about whether Nauthiz has a reversed position, and on these pages I treat it as reversible.
Upside down, the need is still there but you are reading it wrong.
It shows as want dressed up as need, as a shortage you are telling yourself about that the bank statement does not agree with, or as the constraint you have made your identity so that nothing can be asked of you.
Reversed Nauthiz asks: is this a real lack, or a story about one? Be straight with yourself about the answer.
Across the traditions
In the tarot I set Nauthiz beside the Five of Pentacles, two figures walking past a lit window in the snow, cold and short and closer to help than they realise.
That is my own association and nothing stronger.
The Five of Pentacles has its own page in The 78 Cards.
The I Ching page covers the other oracle I cast for a question, and its hexagrams on hardship say much the same thing in a different language.
What have you been calling a need that is really a want, and what real need have you been too proud to name?
If you would like this read against your own chart, my readings are here.
