Nobody has The Fool on its own. The 22 always folds down to 4, so keep The Emperor in mind as you read. The Fool is also rarer than any of the single digit cards, because 22 has to come up as the raw total before any reducing. Across every date from 1900 to 2030 about one person in twenty five lands on it.

Your life's archetype

If The Fool is your birth card, you are here to begin. Over and over. Other people start one or two big things in a life. You start, and start again, and the starting is the point.

The Fool stands at the edge with a small bag and a dog at his heels, and the picture asks the question everyone asks about him: does he know what he is doing? In my experience the people who carry this card usually do not, and it works anyway. They trust life to meet them, and life, more often than seems fair, does. The lesson of The Fool is that the step comes first and the ground appears under it.

The numerology pages explain why the Life Path is reduced part by part while the birth card adds the whole date as one string. The two systems count differently on purpose and tell you different things.

Who you are

You are an optimist, and not the forced kind. You can lose everything in a chapter and open the next one with a surprising lightness, because somewhere in you is a settled knowing that the universe is on your side.

You are spontaneous, adaptable and curious, drawn to the unconventional path before anyone has checked whether it is safe. Change does not frighten you the way it frightens most people. You shed old identities like coats. Allies and opportunities turn up when you need them, as if someone had placed the clues along the road before you got there. I have watched this happen for Fool people enough times to stop calling it luck.

The theme running through your life is faith, and the slow turning of innocence into wisdom.

The shadow

The shadow of The Fool is the step that was recklessness dressed up as courage. Blind faith and discernment feel the same from the inside, right up until the ground does not appear.

You may struggle with commitment, losing interest once the shine wears off, and you may notice a pile of beginnings behind you with very few endings. Your openness can be taken advantage of, because you assume the best of people a little longer than is wise.

The work is to tell the voice of wisdom from the voice of impulse. Both of them say go. Only one of them has packed properly.

In love and at work

In love you are fresh air. You walk into a stale situation and open the windows. The difficulty is what comes after the windows. Deep partnership asks for predictability and staying power, and you can seem unreliable, or emotionally somewhere else, to someone who needs to know you will be there on Tuesday. The relationships that work for you are with people who understand that your need for the new is not a wish to leave them.

At work you belong at the front edge: new ventures, new ideas, the thing nobody has tried. You do your best work in places that reward creativity over procedure, and you wither in rigid hierarchies that want you to do it the way it has always been done. Your satisfaction comes from exploring and starting, and maintaining what already runs will never give you the same feeling.

What you are here to learn

That faith is a choice you make with your eyes open. The mature Fool trusts life and still reads the map.

You are learning to carry the gifts of each ending forward instead of leaving them in the old coat, and that commitment is the ground your freedom grows from, and a life of nothing but beginnings is a life with no harvest. Your greatest achievement is to stay with what you have chosen and remain open at the same time, to keep walking new roads without walking out on the people who love you.

The cards that share your number

The Fool shares the number 4 with The Emperor and Death. In the way I count, which is the way every page here uses, a total of 22 gives you The Fool and then The Emperor, a total of 13 gives Death and then The Emperor, and a total that lands on 4 gives The Emperor alone. Other books count differently and some add a companion card where I do not.

So if you have The Fool, you have two cards, and the second is the builder. The Fool leaps and The Emperor lays foundations, and your life is the conversation between them. The leap without the foundation is drift. The foundation without the leap is a well organised cage. You carry both, which is why Fool people so often surprise everyone by turning out to be good at structure.

The cards either side

In the deck The Fool is followed by The Magician, and the library pairs them with the Wheel of Fortune as a trio of beginnings. The Fool's trust meets The Magician's focused will and the Wheel's turning of larger cycles. Those are the neighbours in the deck, a way of reading the card alongside its companions, and your birth cards are the ones under The cards that share your number above.

Across the traditions

The Fool has its own page in The 78 Cards, which reads it as a card in a spread. Its number 22 is a Master Number in numerology, so read The Number 22 page and then The Number 4, which is what 22 settles into. In Western astrology the card belongs to Uranus, the planet of the sudden awakening and the road nobody saw coming, and the Uranus page in the Western Astrology section describes that planet through the signs. The Tarot Card of the Week post is a shorter companion read when this card comes round.
