Runes
Fehu
Fehu is the first rune of the Elder Futhark, the first of the eight in the first aett, and its sound is F.
The shape is an upright stroke with two branches reaching up and to the right, like the horns of cattle.
The word means cattle, and the picture is the herd: wealth that moves, livestock and the goods you can carry.
The picture
Before there were banks, there were cows.
A family's wealth stood in the paddock and walked to water every morning.
It had to be fed, watched, counted and moved when the grass ran out.
It gave milk and calves and, in the end, meat and leather.
It could also be stolen, lost in a hard winter or traded away in one afternoon.
That is the kind of wealth Fehu names.
It is wealth that moves, and it is wealth that has to be looked after.
I like that the alphabet opens here.
The old people put money first, and I do not think it was greed.
Before you can think about giants or the year turning you have to eat.
Fehu is the rune of earnings, of the goods you can carry, of what you own and what you are willing to share.
In Perth terms it is the pay going into the account, the car in the driveway, the tools in the shed, the two chooks in the back yard.
It is also the skills you carry, because a tradie's hands are her herd and a nurse's training is hers.
The second half of the picture is the one people miss.
Cattle were traded, given as gifts and shared out at a feast.
A herd kept locked in the yard stops being wealth and becomes a worry.
Fehu is about the flow of what you have, out to others and back to you, as much as it is about the having.
When it comes up
When Fehu comes up I read it first as a plain yes to the material question.
Money is coming, or is already here, or the thing you are asking about has real value in it.
It tells you to look at what you own with clear eyes.
Count the herd.
Know what is in the account and what is owed.
Know what your time is worth.
Know which of your possessions are earning their keep and which are just taking up space in the garage.
Then it asks the harder question.
What are you doing with it?
Wealth that sits still goes off, like milk left out on the bench in February.
Fehu asks you to move it.
Invest it, spend it on something that matters, give some of it away, use the skill you have been sitting on for years.
I have come to think the rune is about circulation.
The person who draws Fehu and tightens their grip has read it backwards.
Stand in it by being practical and generous in the same breath.
Pay the bill, then buy a friend lunch.
Fix the fence, then let the neighbour borrow the mower.
Fehu likes a full paddock and an open gate.
If the question was about work, it says the work has worth in it and you should charge properly for it.
If the question was about a relationship, it asks what each of you is bringing to the table and whether it is being shared or counted.
Reversed
Fehu reversed, the branches pointing down, reads as the herd scattered.
Money going out faster than it comes in, a loss, a bad deal, or wealth that has turned into anxiety and has you up half the night counting it.
It can also point to greed, or to its quiet twin, a fear of having anything at all in case it is taken.
When it lands this way up I ask where the leak is, and whether the thing you are afraid to lose was ever yours to hold so tightly.
It passes.
Herds grow back, and so do bank balances, slower than we would like.
Across the traditions
I put Fehu beside the Ace of Pentacles in the tarot, the coin held out in an open hand, the seed of something that will pay its way.
That is my own pairing and nothing stronger; the two systems grew up a long way apart and never met.
The Number 1 page in the Numerology section carries the same note of a first thing set in motion, and the How to Cast the Runes page shows you how Fehu reads in a three rune draw.
What do you own that would do more good if you let it move?
