The Major Cycles
The Major Cycles are the slow weather of your life. Three long seasons, each about twenty eight years, each coloured by a single number.
If the Pinnacles are the chapters of the book, the Major Cycles are the climate the whole book is written in. You do not notice the climate from one day to the next. You notice it looking back, which is the only way most of us notice anything. Hindsight is greasy walls. You see clearly looking back, and you can never climb back up to the moment you were in.
The three cycles
The First Cycle runs from birth to about 28. These are the formative years, when the number shapes your childhood, your family and the person you arrive at adulthood as.
The Second Cycle runs from about 28 to about 56. These are the productive middle years: work, partnership, family and whatever you build.
The Third Cycle runs from about 56 onward. These are the harvest years, when the number colours what you gather in and what you hand on.
Notice the word "about". These are seasons, and seasons do not change at midnight on a set date. Most people feel the old cycle thinning and the new one arriving over a couple of years either side of 28 and 56.
Take Sarah Jane Mitchell, born on 14 March 1987. Her Life Path is 6, so her first Pinnacle ends at 30 and so does her First Cycle, in 2017. Her Second Cycle runs the next twenty seven years, to 2044, and her Third comes after that. At 39 she is well into her Second Cycle, the productive middle stretch, which is right where you would expect to find someone building a life.
How to find yours
The three cycles come straight from your birth date, and each one is a single part of it. The First Cycle is your month of birth, reduced. The Second Cycle is your day of birth, reduced. The Third Cycle is your year of birth, reduced. Keep 11, 22 or 33 if a part lands on one.
Sarah was born on 14 March 1987. March is 3, so her First Cycle is a 3. The day 14 is 1 plus 4, which is 5, so her Second Cycle is a 5. The year 1987 is 1 plus 9 plus 8 plus 7, which is 25, and 2 plus 5 is 7, so her Third Cycle is a 7. Her childhood had the voice and play of the 3, her middle years have the freedom and change of the 5, and her harvest years will have the depth of the 7.
For the handover ages, the First Cycle ends at the same age as your first Pinnacle, which is 36 minus your Life Path (use the root for a Master, so 11 counts as 2). The Second Cycle runs twenty seven years from there, and the Third runs for the rest of your life. That is where the "about 28 and about 56" comes from: for most Life Paths the first handover falls somewhere between 27 and 35.
What follows is what each cycle number means once you have it.
How the cycles sit with the rest of the chart
The Major Cycles run in the background while everything else plays out in front. Your Life Path is still the script. Your Pinnacles still change four times. The cycle is the season it all happens in, and it explains why the same Pinnacle can feel very different at 20 and at 60.
When a cycle number matches one of your other numbers, I pay attention, because that theme will be loud for the whole of those years. When it is a number you have nowhere else in your chart, the cycle tends to teach you something that did not come naturally to you at birth.
What each cycle number brings
Cycle 1. Independence and self direction. In the First Cycle it is often the child who had to grow up self reliant early. In the Second it is the business started, the leadership role taken, a middle life made unmistakably your own. In the Third it is the mature pioneer who starts again at 60 because they want to. Watch for isolation and forgetting how to ask for help.
Cycle 2. Partnership and sensitivity. The First Cycle 2 is the child who felt every mood in the house and kept the peace. In the Second Cycle long marriages and partnerships deepen. In the Third, friendships of decades become precious and you become the quiet elder people lean on. Watch for losing yourself to keep the peace.
Cycle 3. Voice and expression. The child always drawing and telling stories, the middle years that open up writing, teaching or performing, or the late bloomer who takes up art at 65 and does their best work. Watch for scattering, many things started and few finished.
Cycle 4. Foundations and patient work. Something durable is being built, slowly. Decisions in a 4 cycle involve commitment and long horizons, and steady effort counts for more than inspiration.
Cycle 5. Movement and change. Travel, new careers, new places, new people. The cycle educates the senses and widens your world. Watch for restlessness that never lets anything settle.
Cycle 6. Love, home and responsibility. Children, partners, parents and community are at the centre. Decisions are made with family and duty in mind. Remember to include yourself in the circle of care.
Cycle 7. Depth. Study, solitude and spiritual practice. You shed whatever no longer feels meaningful and turn toward understanding, and achievement loses its pull. Keep a door open to people while you go inward.
Cycle 8. Authority and the material world. Running things, building wealth, carrying consequences at scale. The work is to hold power well and to keep it from hardening you.
Cycle 9. Completion and the wider view. Endings, letting go, forgiveness, and compassion for people well beyond your own circle. Do the grief work as it comes, and the cycle leaves you with a spacious, generous perspective.
Cycle 11. A Master cycle, read at full strength with the 2 underneath. Sensitivity, intuition and spiritual development across a whole season of life. It asks for grounding, regular practice and care of the nervous system, or it overwhelms.
Cycle 22. A Master cycle with the 4 underneath. A long season organised around building something substantial. Choose a project worth the years, build the team, and protect your health while you do it.
Cycle 33. The rarest of the Master cycles, with the 6 underneath. A season of becoming a real teacher or healer. It asks for ongoing inner work, and for teaching only what you have lived.
Living your cycle well
Every cycle has its gifts and its shadow, and the shadow is usually the gift taken too far. The 1's independence becomes loneliness. The 2's sensitivity becomes self abandonment. The 8's authority becomes control. The weather comes whether you know your cycle or not. Knowing it tells you what to pack.
Which season of life are you in now, and what has its weather been teaching you?
