Neither of them makes much noise in your twenties. I have sat with plenty of people in their forties who looked at their Reality number and said, quietly, "That is me now. It was not me at thirty." That is exactly how it is meant to work.

The Reality number

The Reality number is also called the Maturity number, and the second name tells you most of what you need to know. Your Life Path, from your birth date, is the lesson plan you arrived with. Your Destiny, from your full birth name, is the person you are here to become. Somewhere around the middle of life those two streams start to run together, and the Reality number is the shape they make once they meet.

It is quiet in the first half of life. It starts to make itself felt somewhere between 35 and 40, and it comes into its full strength from the middle fifties onward. So if you are 28 and your Reality number sounds nothing like you, good. It is not meant to yet.

How to find it

Add your Life Path number to your Destiny number and reduce the total to a single digit, keeping 11, 22 or 33 if the total lands on one of them. If you have not worked out those two numbers yet, the Life Path post and the Destiny post in the daily posts each walk you through it step by step.

Here is an example. Sarah Jane Mitchell was born on 14 March 1987. Her Life Path is 6: the day 14 reduces to 5, March is 3, and 1987 adds to 25 and then 7, so 5 plus 3 plus 7 is 15, which reduces to 6. Every letter of her full birth name adds up to 69, which reduces to 15 and then to 6, so her Destiny is also 6. Six plus six is 12, and 1 plus 2 is 3. Sarah's Reality number is 3.

Sarah has spent the first half of her life with two 6s, which is a great deal of caring, carrying and being responsible for everybody. Her Reality 3 says the second half is where she gets to play, speak up and make things. Her friends will probably notice the change before she does. Go figure.

What each Reality number brings

Reality 1. The second half of life is lived on your own terms. The need for approval fades and you become the author of your own direction. The shadow is going it alone so completely that you stop including the people who love you.

Reality 2. A softening. Partnership, cooperation and the slow, patient work of lasting relationships move to the centre, and you grow into the peacemaker and the bridge between people.

Reality 3. Voice and colour. Friendships multiply, the creativity you put away comes back out, and life gets lighter and more social. Watch for scattering yourself across too many things.

Reality 4. The builder. The later years are for making things of lasting value and holding them steady. A quiet retirement will bore you senseless. Watch for becoming rigid and set in your opinions.

Reality 5. Freedom, fully earned. Travel, change and new interests keep you young in spirit well into old age. The lesson is to choose your adventures with care and see them through.

Reality 6. Home, family and community. You become the one others turn to for comfort and sound advice, the matriarch or patriarch of whoever is in your care.

Reality 7. The turn inward. Study, solitude, spiritual practice and a deeper search for what life is actually about. You will want more time alone, and that is fine, as long as it does not harden into withdrawal.

Reality 8. Authority in the world. The later years bring the capacity to run things, handle money and carry real responsibility. The work is to use that power with integrity.

Reality 9. The humanitarian elder. Compassion widens, what is finished is let go, and your concern moves beyond your own circle to the wider world.

Reality 11, 22 and 33. These are Master Numbers and I read them at full strength, with their root of 2, 4 or 6 sitting underneath. An 11 brings a deepening of intuition and the kind of presence people seek out for counsel. A 22 often makes the second half of life the most productive of all, with work built to outlast you. A 33 calls you into teaching, healing or caring for others from everything you have lived. The Master Numbers post in the daily posts explains why these three are treated differently.

The Growth number

The Growth number points at the area of life where you will grow the most. It shows where the stretching happens on the way to wherever you end up, and the stretching is rarely comfortable while it is going on. You find it from your first name alone: add the letter values of your first name as it was given at birth, every letter, and reduce, keeping a Master Number if one lands. Sarah is 1 plus 1 plus 9 plus 1 plus 8, which is 20, which is 2, so Sarah's Growth number is 2. The Letter Values page has the table. This page is about what the number means once you have it. In my own notes each one boils down to a single line, which I like, because a single line is easy to carry around.

Growth 1. Asserting yourself and being the individual. Trusting your own judgement when others disagree, and leading without waiting for permission.

Growth 2. Your relationships with others. Listening, cooperation and diplomacy, without losing yourself in what everyone else needs.

Growth 3. The way you use your words and your creativity. Finding your own voice, and learning when silence says more.

Growth 4. Fear and security. Building a solid foundation, and finding the kind of security that lives inside you, because nothing outside ever stays still for long.

Growth 5. The responsible use of freedom. Learning to choose well and commit, so that freedom stops turning into chaos.

Growth 6. Love. Giving it and receiving it with healthy boundaries, without rescuing people or making a martyr of yourself.

Growth 7. Mystical and spiritual wisdom. Trusting your inner knowing, and bringing what you learn back down into everyday life.

Growth 8. Money and the responsible use of power. Money and power amplify whoever you already are, so the inner work has to come first.

Growth 9. Compassion and forgiveness. Forgiving without excusing harm, and holding kindness and accountability in the same hand.

Growth 11. Teaching spiritual truth and balancing your own energy. Trusting what you perceive and finding the courage to share it.

Growth 22. Leading with intuition and putting universal principles to practical use. A big vision, built one patient step at a time.

Growth 33. Mastery on the emotional level around self sacrifice: giving to others without becoming a martyr.

Reading them together

Put these two beside your Life Path and you get a rough map of a life: where you started, where you are stretching, and who you are becoming. When the Growth number and the Reality number agree, the stretching you do through your thirties and forties is direct preparation for the person you become. When they differ, the growth tends to arrive from an unexpected direction, and that is usually where the best stories come from.

None of this is fixed. The numbers describe the weather, and you still decide what to do in it. Look at your own Reality number and ask whether you can already feel it arriving.

You will be your own teacher. You will be your own guide. All I will do is help you to remember what you already know.
