That is reducing. Once you have it, you can work out every position on these pages, and it takes far less time to do than to read about.

The basic move

Take any number bigger than 9, split it into its digits, and add them. If the answer is still bigger than 9, do it again.

The year 1987 is 1 plus 9 plus 8 plus 7, which is 25. That is still two digits, so 2 plus 5 is 7. The year 1987 reduces to 7.

The year 2026 is 2 plus 0 plus 2 plus 6, which is 10, and 1 plus 0 is 1. That is why 2026 is called a Universal Year 1, the first year of a new nine year cycle for the whole world.

Numerology works with the nine single digits, 1 to 9, because each one carries its own meaning. The bigger numbers are the same nine wearing more clothes. Reducing simply takes the clothes off so you can see who is underneath.

Reducing a name

A name works the same way, once every letter has been turned into a number. The Letter Values page gives you the table and walks through it letter by letter. Here I only want the arithmetic.

Sarah Jane Mitchell is an invented woman I use as an example across these pages. The letters of Sarah add to 20, Jane adds to 12 and Mitchell adds to 37. 20 plus 12 plus 37 is 69. Then 6 plus 9 is 15, and 1 plus 5 is 6. Her Destiny number is 6.

Notice it took two rounds. That is common with names, because a long name gives a big total. Keep going until you reach one digit, or until you reach a Master Number.

The Master Numbers

The Master Numbers I teach are 11, 22 and 33, and they are never reduced. When a sum lands on one of them, you stop and leave it exactly as it is.

The reason is that each one carries more than its root digit. The 11 is the intuitive, the 2 turned all the way up. The 22 is the master builder, the 4 at full stretch. The 33 is the master teacher, the 6 in its most giving form. Reduce them and you lose the very thing they came to say. A person carrying one usually has a harder early road and a larger gift that arrives later, after the lessons. The Master Numbers post in the daily posts says more, and each Master has its own page in The Numbers.

You will see them written two ways, as 11 or as 11/2. Both mean the same thing: a Master 11, sitting on a root of 2. Many people with a Master Number live mostly on the root for years and grow into the Master later. Both are in the chart, and both get read.

So when you are adding and you hit 11, 22 or 33, stop. Sarah's vowels add to exactly 22, so her Soul Urge is a Master 22 and stays that way.

Karmic Debt numbers

Four other two digit numbers deserve a second look before you reduce them: 13, 14, 16 and 19. These are the Karmic Debt numbers, and they describe a lesson carried over and being worked through again in this lifetime, properly this time.

You still reduce them, so 13 becomes 4, 14 becomes 5, 16 becomes 7 and 19 becomes 1. But you write down the debt number beside the result, because it changes how that number gets lived. A plain 5 and a 5 that came from a 14 are not the same 5.

Watch for them in the total for each position in the chart, and in any step on the way down as well (a total of 77 reduces through 14 to 5, and that 5 carries the 14 debt): the Life Path, the Birthday, the Destiny, the Soul Urge, the Personality, the Personal Year and the four Pinnacles. Sarah was born on the 14th, so her Birthday number is 5, and she carries the 14 Karmic Debt in that position. Someone born on 5 January 1987 has a day of 5, a month of 1 and a year of 7, which adds to 13, so their Life Path is 4 with the 13 Karmic Debt behind it.

What each debt asks of you is in the Karmic Debt post in the daily posts, and I will not repeat it here.

The Life Path method

This is where people most often go wrong, so I want to be exact.

For your Life Path, you reduce the day, the month and the year separately first. You keep 11 or 22 if one of those parts lands on it. Then you add the three results together and reduce again, keeping a Master Number if the total lands on one.

Sarah was born on 14 March 1987. The day is 1 plus 4, which is 5. The month is 3. The year is 7, as we found above. 5 plus 3 plus 7 is 15, and 1 plus 5 is 6. Life Path 6.

Now a date with a Master in it. Take 29 April 1987. The day is 2 plus 9, which is 11, and 11 is a Master, so it stays. April is 4, and the year is 7. 11 plus 4 plus 7 is 22, and 22 is a Master too. That person walks a Life Path 22.

You will find books and websites that run every digit of the date together in one long string, and I used that shortcut myself in one of the early daily posts. For a chart I do not, and these pages do not. Run 29 April 1987 that way and you end up at a 4, and the Master Number disappears without anyone noticing. Reducing each part on its own keeps the day, the month and the year separate, and that is where the Masters show themselves.

The Personal Year method

Your Personal Year runs from birthday to birthday and sets the tone of your year. The sum looks almost the same as the Life Path, with one difference.

Numerologists are split on how to do this sum, and there are two methods worth knowing.

  1. Masters kept throughout. This is the one I lead with. The day, the month and the year in force each keep 11, 22 or 33 when they land on one, so the 11th, the 22nd and the 29th go in whole, November goes in as 11, and a Master year such as 2027 goes in as 11. Add the three, and keep the total if it lands on a Master. It is the same rule as the Life Path above, where the parts already keep their Masters, so one method runs right through your chart.
  2. Single digit parts. Each part is reduced all the way to one digit first, and a Master is kept only if the final total lands on one.

Take a birthday of 26 November in 2026. The day is 2 plus 6, which is 8, and the year 2026 is 1. With Masters kept throughout, November goes in as 11, so 8 plus 11 plus 1 is 20, which is 2, a Personal Year 2. With single digit parts, November goes in as 2, so 8 plus 2 plus 1 is 11, written 11/2. Most birthdays give the same answer either way. When they differ, as here, I read the first, and the calculator shows both.

There is a third method, which reduces everything to a single digit and keeps no Master anywhere. I do not use it, because it throws the Master Numbers away.

Sarah's birthday is 14 March, so for 2026 it is 5 plus 3 plus 1, which is 9. She is in a Personal Year 9, the closing year of her own cycle while the world opens a new one. The Personal Year post in the daily posts gives the feel of each year, and Personal Year, Month and Day takes it further.

Check your working

Do every sum twice. It is very easy to drop a digit, and a wrong number read with confidence is worse than no number at all. I have been doing this for a long time and I still check.

Then sit with what you find. The arithmetic is only ever the door. You will be your own teacher.
