This week the cards drew The Emperor.
The Emperor belongs to Aries, and this year Saturn, the planet of rules, structure and time, is walking through Aries. Saturn is retrograde in Aries right now, and Mercury turned retrograde on Saturday. Two planets going back over the ground, and the deck has handed me the card of the one who builds. The chart and the cards, two languages, same soul.
Look at the image.
A crowned king sits on a big square throne of grey stone.
Carved into the throne are four ram’s heads, the sign of Aries.
He wears a red robe, and under it you can see armour on his legs.
In his right hand he holds a sceptre shaped like an ankh, the old Egyptian sign of life, and in his left hand a golden orb.
His beard is long and white.
Behind him is a range of bare orange mountains, and at their foot, if you look closely, a thin little stream.
Most people see this card and think control, the strict father, the boss who says no.
The Emperor is the card of the structure that holds your life up.
He is the walls of the house.
The routine that gets you out of bed.
The budget, the boundary, the word you keep.
Look at the throne again.
It is square.
Four corners, four ram’s heads, nothing round or soft about it. Four is the number of the foundation, and the Emperor is card number four.
Nothing grows on those mountains behind him, and that is the point. He has built something steady in a hard place.
And there is the stream, small and easy to miss, running at the foot of the rock.
Structure is there to protect something alive.
This week that matters.
Mercury retrograde is the season of crossed wires, lost keys and emails that land in the wrong inbox. When the outside world gets slippery, the Emperor says you build your own steadiness from the inside.
Same time to bed.
Same walk in the morning.
Check the booking twice and keep your word.
Now the shadow, because every card has one.
The Emperor gone wrong is the tyrant.
The rules become the point, and the person who made them forgets what they were protecting. Control instead of care. The stone without the stream.
And there is the quieter shadow too, the person who never builds any structure at all, so every week is a scramble and everybody else ends up holding them up.
So the practice for this week.
Pick one area of your life that has been running you, instead of you running it.
Sleep, money, food, your phone, your time.
Set one rule for it, a small one, and keep it for seven days.
That is all.
One rule, kept, is worth more than ten rules written down and broken by Tuesday.
Where in your life do you need a little more Emperor?
