On Friday morning, 16 October, at 10:40 Perth time, Pluto stops in the sky and turns direct. It has been retrograde since May, five months of going back over the same three degrees of Aquarius.
I have written this year about Saturn turning retrograde in July and Venus turning retrograde two weeks ago.
Pluto is the third of the set, and it is the one people notice least, because Pluto is slow.
Slow, and deep.
Pluto governs the changes you cannot undo. The death of something, the end of a version of yourself, the thing that once it has happened means you cannot go back to being the person who did not know. Think of it as a planet of compost.
Something dies, it breaks down, it goes dark for a long time, and then something grows out of it that could not have grown any other way.
Here is what a Pluto retrograde does.
For five months the compost has been turned over. Whatever deep change started for you in the first half of this year, in your identity, your power, your sense of what you will and will not put up with, has been going back over its own ground since May. Nothing has been undone, it has been reviewed, at the level below where you can see it.
You may have felt it as a stuckness with no name.
A thing you thought you had finished with in autumn that kept coming back in a slightly different coat.
From Friday, that stops.
The turning over is finished and the growing starts. Pluto never does fireworks. It will feel like something under the floor that has been shifting for months finally settling into its new position, and you notice one morning that you are standing differently.
Now, Pluto is in Aquarius, and it will be there for the next twenty years. Aquarius is the sign of the group, the network, the future, the way we all do things together.
So the deep change Pluto is working on is bigger than any one of us. It is the change in how people organise themselves, who holds power and who is finally done being told, and every one of us is inside it whether we follow astrology or not.
Your own small version of that is the one you can do something about.
And here is a gift on the same day.
Friday afternoon Mars in Leo makes its easy angle to Saturn in Aries. Drive and discipline agree for once.
So the day the deep thing starts to move is also the day you have the energy and the structure to move with it.
That does not happen often.
So the practice for Friday.
Ask yourself what died in you this year that you have been quietly mourning.
Then ask what is growing out of it.
You already know the answer to the second question.
Pluto has been composting it since May, and on Friday it comes up through the soil.
What has been changing in you this year that you cannot go back from?
