The alarm goes off.
What happens next?
I know people in three tribes here.
The first tribe set one alarm, and when it goes off they are up.
Feet on the floor, no discussion.
Some of them do not even need the alarm, they wake a minute before it and switch it off so it does not disturb anybody.
The second tribe set one alarm and then hit snooze.
Once, maybe twice.
They know exactly how many snoozes they can afford and they spend every one of them.
The third tribe set six.
5:40, 5:50, 6:00, 6:10, 6:20, and the real one at 6:30.
The first five are a negotiation, and the person having it knows perfectly well how it ends.
Now, plenty of this is the body.
Some of us wake sharp and some of us wake in fog, and no amount of discipline changes which one you were born with. But I think it tells you something else too, and it is about how you meet a decision. The one alarm tribe have decided the night before, and the morning is just carrying it out.
The snooze tribe decided, but they like to renegotiate once the facts are in.
And the six alarm tribe have not decided at all, they have set up a system that decides for them, a bit at a time, so they never have to. None of them is wrong, and the six alarm system works, or they would not still be using it. But every one of them is a small picture of how that person handles the first decision of every day.
So, one alarm and up, or six and a negotiation, and what time is the real one?
