Magic is real

Three years ago I wrote a short post with that title, and a lot of you have joined since, so today I want to build it out properly.

To understand why magic is real, you first need to understand what it is.

Magic is simply something we cannot yet explain.

Take a phone back a thousand years, show a village that you can talk to somebody on the other side of the world, and you would be a magician, or burned as one.

Nothing about the phone changed on the trip.

What changed was the size of the explanation the people watching had available to them.

That is all magic has ever been.

The gap between what happens and what we can currently explain.

And the gap is a great deal bigger than we are taught.

Take time.

We were taught that time runs in one direction, at one speed, the same for everybody, and that it can be measured like a length of rope.

Then somebody measured it properly, and it turned out that a clock in orbit runs at a different rate to a clock on the ground.

The satellites your phone uses to find the shops have to be corrected for this every single day, or the map would drift by kilometres.

Time bends, and we build machines that only work because it bends.

Nobody calls that magic, because the explanation arrived.

Go figure.

Take dreams.

In a dream you fly, you walk through walls, you make things appear, and you hold a long conversation with somebody who died ten years ago, and every bit of it is completely ordinary while it is happening.

Every night half the planet does things that are impossible by daylight rules, then wakes up and calls it nothing.

I have never accepted that it is nothing.

I think the dream state is the one place most of us still have permission to use what we came with.

Take manifesting, which is the one people argue about.

Plenty of people can do it.

You decide on something clearly, you hold it, you act as though it is already on its way, and the thing arrives, quite often by a route you could never have planned.

We know the method works often enough to teach it.

Nobody can fully explain the mechanism.

So by the definition above, manifesting is magic, in exactly the way a phone was magic a thousand years ago.

Here is what I have come to think, after forty years of watching this stuff work.

Energy and intention are the world itself, working the way it was designed to.

You are a spiritual being having a human experience, and the spiritual part did not switch off when you took the body.

It came with the same abilities it always had.

What switched off was permission.

Somewhere between the age of four and the age of fourteen most of us were taught, very kindly, that the things we could feel and see and know were imagination, and that grown ups do not fly.

So we stopped.

We stopped because nobody around us believed we could, and a child will take the belief of the room over their own experience every single time.

I was four when I told my mother about something I had seen.

It was clear, it was real, and I had no reason to think it was unusual.

She sent me to bed with two aspirin.

That was the whole response.

Two aspirin and bed.

And I learned, at four, the lesson most of us learn, which is that you keep the magic to yourself until you find people who can hold it.

It took me a long time to find those people.

A good many of them are reading this.

Now, the line from the original post that people still quote back to me.

You are limited only by your belief system.

Let me be as careful with it today as I was three years ago.

I am NOT suggesting you stand on a cliff and jump.

The body has rules, and the rules apply for as long as you are in it.

What I am suggesting is that the ceiling on what you can perceive, sense, know, heal and draw towards you is set almost entirely by what you have decided is possible.

And most of us inherited that decision, at about age four, from a room full of people who were guessing.

Go and look at the people in every tradition who walked on water, or healed with a hand, or knew what was coming before it came.

Every tradition has them, and the traditions do not talk to each other.

Either every one of them is lying, or the ceiling is higher than we were told.

Think of Neo in The Matrix, standing in the hallway, finally seeing the code behind the wall.

Nothing about the hallway changed.

He did.

Three things I would ask you to do with this, and none of them involve cliffs.

  1. Notice the gap.

Once a day, catch something you cannot explain and refuse to explain it away.

The phone call from the person you were just thinking about.

The dream that turned out to be right.

The parking space.

Do not build a theory, just notice it and say thank you.

  1. Ask before you decide it is impossible.

The next time you hear yourself say I could never, stop and ask who told you that, and how old you were when you believed them.

  1. Sit for thirty minutes a day.

I say this in nearly every post and I will keep saying it.

The abilities are all still there.

Meditation is how you turn the permission back on, and in forty years I have not found a shortcut.

One more thing, and I owe it to the people who were here in 2023.

In March of that year I had three days of visions unlike anything in my life, and I said at the time that I would share them.

I have shared parts of them with a few people who know this work deeply.

I still have not shared them in full, here or anywhere.

Some things take longer to find the words for than others, and I am still finding them.

They are the reason I wrote the original post, and they are the reason I still believe every word of it.

That will do for today.

Magic is real.

It is what we have not explained yet, and it is also what you were built out of.

What is one thing that has happened to you that you cannot explain, and have never explained away?
