The 78 Cards
Queen of Swords
Minor Arcana, the suit of Swords, the Queen. Element: air.

Clear sight, straight words, and wisdom that has been earned.
The picture
A crowned queen sits side on in a stone throne carved with the face of a winged child. She holds a sword upright in one hand and lifts the other hand open, as if inviting someone forward. Her cloak is patterned with clouds, more clouds gather low behind her, and a single bird flies high in the clear sky.
Upright
The Queen is mastery on the inside, the one who holds and nurtures her suit. The Queen of Swords has lived through a few of the numbered cards and learnt from every one. She sees clearly, she says what is so, and she does it with care.
The raised hand matters as much as the sword. Her blade is straight and steady, and at the same time she is reaching out. Clear thinking and welcome sit together in her. She is good judgement, firm boundaries, independence, and a mind nobody can fool for long.
She is the friend who tells you the thing nobody else will, and tells you kindly. The one you ring when you need to stop going round in circles and see the situation as it is.
A court card can be a person in your life, an approach you are taking, or a part of you. The age and gender of the figure do not limit who it describes. Anyone who has turned hard experience into clear thinking carries a little of this Queen.
Reversed
Reversed, I read her as too much or turned inward. Too much is the sword without the open hand: coldness, cutting remarks, criticism that stops caring whether it helps. Turned inward is all that sharp clarity pointed at yourself, the inner critic who notices every flaw and forgives none of them.
To tell which, notice who is getting cut. If it is the people around you, it is too much, and the hand needs to open again. If it is you, it has turned inward, and the kindness this Queen gives so readily to others is overdue at home.
When it turns up
What needs saying, and how can you say it with your hand open?
