Page of Wands tarot card, Rider Waite Smith deck

A curious spark, and news of something exciting.

The picture

A young figure in a hat with a red feather stands in open, dry country, holding a tall sprouting wand with both hands and looking up at the top of it. The tunic is yellow with black markings, and there are pointed hills in the distance.

Upright

Every Page is a beginner and a bearer of news. In Wands, the Page is fascinated. Look at the way he gazes up at the wand, as though he has never seen anything so interesting.

This is the card of a new passion, before you know whether you are any good at it. A class you want to take, an idea for a business, a place you want to see. It can also bring news: a message or an invitation that lights something up.

The Page does not know what to do with the fire yet. He only knows he wants it. That is right for where he is. Enthusiasm comes first, and skill follows. Every master of anything started out looking up at the wand like this.

Like every court card, the Page can be a person, an approach, or a part of you. The age and gender of the figure do not limit who it describes.

Reversed

Reversed, the spark fizzles. I read this as blocked, or as too much. The idea is there and you will not let yourself be a beginner at it. Or the reverse, you pick up something new every week and never stay long enough to learn it.

To tell which, ask how many unfinished starts you have lying around. None at all, and something is stopping you beginning. A cupboard full, and the Page is asking you to choose one.

When it turns up

What would you try if you were allowed to be bad at it for a while?
