Relationships and Guidance
Dreams
Every night half the planet does things that are impossible by daylight rules, then wakes up and calls it nothing.
I have never accepted that it is nothing.
Dreams have a special meaning for your life. They are guidance, they are a place to work things out, and they are the most common way someone who has died comes back to visit.
A halfway house
Dreams are a portal to the spirit world, a kind of halfway house that exists in the astral. That halfway house is largely responsible for helping you make sense of this plane of existence.
It is a place where the physical laws that govern this reality are suspended. You can create things and they exist. You can interact with people who have passed over. You can fly, magic things into being, and bend time in any direction you like. And every bit of it feels completely ordinary while it is happening. You will really discover the joy of this if you ever have a lucid dream.
I think the dream state is the one place most of us still have permission to use what we came with. The Magic Is Real post of 18 October 2026 goes further into that.
My own dreams
I remember most of my dreams, and they seem to be a lot different from most people's.
Some time ago I dreamt I was a shape shifting alien on a remote alien planet, trying to find my way to a destination I did not know. The symbolism of that was not lost on me.
I regularly have dreams where I can levitate in front of other people who seem unable to do the same. Those dreams always leave me with a belief that I could do it awake as well. I have tried it a few times, and so far I have not been successful.
So if your own dreams seem strange, you are in good company.
Dreams as signposts
The universe uses every channel it can to reach you, and dreams are one of them. A signpost can come in a song, a conversation or a sign on a bus, and it can come in a dream you remember when you wake. The Signs and Signposts page covers the rest of the channels.
Most of us have had at least one dream that turned out to be right. When that happens, do not build a theory around it. Notice it and say thank you.
What you take to bed with you
What thoughts occupy your mind as you go to sleep? What thoughts occupy your mind when you wake up?
Both matter, because both reflect your daily energy. Most people go to sleep with stresses, worries, things to do and things not done. Those things may be important in your life, but if they are the last thing in your head every night, you are giving them more control over the health of your energy than they deserve.
So keep a journal of your thoughts before sleep and your thoughts on waking. Over time you will get a picture of what you are really focused on. Add your dreams while you are at it. What kinds of dreams do you remember, and what emotions are in those dreams?
Keep the notebook by the bed and write your dreams down the moment you wake, before you even sit up. Dreams fade in minutes. The more you write down, the more you will remember.
Lucid dreaming
Lucid dreaming is being in a dream and knowing that you are dreaming. You are asleep, you are in the dream, and you are aware of it. It is a fun state to be in, because you have abilities far beyond the ones you have awake.
It is a skill, and anybody can learn it. The two methods I have seen work again and again are reality testing, where you get into the habit of asking yourself during the day whether you are dreaming and then checking, and wake back to bed, where you wake partway through the night, stay up quietly for a while and go back to sleep with your mind still half awake. Of the two, reality testing works best for most people.
I set both out step by step in the Lucid Dreaming post of 17 October 2026, so I will not repeat them here. Read that one and start tonight.
One thing to hold onto. A dream is a place your soul goes to work things out, and a lucid dream is a visit there with the lights on. Treat it with respect.
When someone who has died comes to visit
A question I have been asked a lot over the years is how to communicate with someone who has passed over.
There are several ways. A deep meditative state is one, and it is better taught in person, step by step, than written in a few paragraphs. The easiest thing you can do on your own is talk to them, out loud or in your mind. It is very likely you will not get an answer, so it can feel quite one sided.
So ask them to visit you in a dream, where you can talk to them. And ask that you will remember the dream when you wake.
That is the simplest method, and the one most likely to succeed.
Keep in mind that those in spirit have their own lives to live. They are not sitting idly by waiting for you to make contact, and they will not always come through when you visit a medium either. They generally come through when they have a message they want to pass on, and that is true of dreams as well. The difference with a dream is that you have put a request to them, and that is far easier for them to answer because they have had notice. Time does not exist in the spirit world, which is hard to explain, so take "notice" loosely. All I can tell you is that the chance of a visit is higher in a dream, and you get to talk with them, rather than simply being handed a message.
Be patient. It may not happen straight away.
When it does, you will know. A visit feels different from an ordinary dream. It is more vivid and more real, and you wake knowing you were with them. Dream visits are the most common visit of all. The Seeing Spirit page covers the other ways they make themselves known.
Where to start
Tonight, before you sleep, notice what is in your head. Write it down. In the morning, write down what you dreamt and how it felt.
Do that for a week and see what picture starts to form.
Do you remember your dreams?
