The Freedom of Letting Go

A mandala is a circular geometric design that holds a spiritual teaching.

In Tibetan Buddhism, some are made from coloured sand. Grain by grain, millions of grains, monks spend weeks building one. When it is finished it is breathtaking. It is also temporary.

The monks bless the mandala. Then they begin to destroy it. They sweep the careful colours inwards into a single grey pile.

That pile is carried in procession to a river or the sea, and the sand is poured into moving water. It is sent out into the world, carried away by the current, returned to the earth.

Nothing is kept. Nothing is preserved.

The point was never the mandala. The point was the making, and the letting go.

Everything you build will one day be swept away, by you or by time.

That is not the tragedy.

That is the design.
