Hexagram 8, Holding Together
Hexagram 8 is Holding Together, Pi, Water over Earth. From the bottom the lines run broken, broken, broken, broken, solid, broken.
One solid line, second from the top, with five broken lines gathered under it. Turn The Army over and the commander is standing in the open now, and the people have come to find them.
The figure
Earth sits below, the mother, receptive and yielding. Water sits above, the middle son, the abyss, depth and danger. The picture is water lying on the land, filling every hollow, running into every crack, and holding the whole paddock together as one wet shining thing after rain.
That is community. Separate parts that have found their right relationship. The solid line in the fifth place is the one everyone gathers around, and the figure is quite clear that they gather because they want to. Nobody is marched here. Water flows where it is welcome and stays there.
Its pair is Hexagram 7, The Army, the same six lines the other way up, where the leader stands in among the people and drives the effort.
When it comes up in a reading
When Holding Together comes up for a question, the moment is about belonging. Who are your people, who is at the centre of them, and is it the right centre. The hexagram is warm about alliance and union, and it is also fussy about them. The sense of the figure is to ask yourself, before you join, whether the one at the centre has the steadiness and the character to deserve what you are about to give.
If you are the one at the centre, the counsel runs the other way. Be worth gathering around. Be constant, be clear about what you stand for, and let people come in their own time. Water does not chase anyone. The old picture is of a ruler who hunts from three sides only and leaves the fourth open, so that whatever wants to leave can leave, and whatever stays, stays of its own accord.
There is also a line in this one about timing that I always point out. If you are going to join, join now. Someone who hangs back, waits to see how it goes and turns up when the thing is already built has missed the part that mattered. Late is a kind of no.
As a birth hexagram
If this is your birth hexagram, or if it keeps coming back to you, you build community without trying to. People gather around you. Groups form. Alliances happen. A club starts forming at your kitchen table while you are making the tea. Go figure.
You understand what builds trust and what wears it away. You notice the small betrayals and the small kindnesses, the undercurrents that strengthen a bond or quietly fray it, and that attention gives you real wisdom about how groups live and die. And you are loyal, in the active sense. Once you have joined yourself to people or to a cause you stay, and you do the work of staying.
So you are the hub. People who know you know each other through you. When a group is deciding where to go, people listen to you, because they can tell you have the whole in mind and not just your own corner of it.
The shadow is loyalty to a group that has gone bad. The same binding power that holds a good community together can hold you in one you should have left years ago, and the mature Hexagram 8 person has learned, usually the hard way, that real loyalty sometimes looks like leaving. The second shadow is control. Building community can slide into managing everyone's part in it, and a managed belonging is no belonging at all.
At maturity you become the trusted centre of something substantial. The friendships kept across decades, the groups that held, the people who found a place because you made one. In a time when everything feels like a transaction, that is a real contribution, and there are fewer people doing it than there used to be.
If a line moves
Lines are counted from the bottom. A moving lower line puts the matter at its beginning, where the counsel is to come to the alliance with sincerity and nothing hidden, because the bond is only as good as its first day. A moving middle line is the heart of the matter, the question of who exactly you are holding to, whether it is the right person and whether it is for the right reasons. A moving upper line is the end, and the going too far here is the one who never committed, who kept a foot outside until the door closed. Change the moving line to its opposite and you have the second hexagram, the direction the situation is heading. The How to Cast a Hexagram page shows how.
Across the traditions
The Eight Trigrams page gives Earth and Water on their own, with their lines, their places in the family and the pictures they carry. The Chinese Astrology section has a page on Yin and Yang for the two kinds of line. My own association in the tarot is the Three of Cups, the three of them with the cups raised and the harvest in, and I hold that as my picture and nothing stronger.
Who is at the centre of the groups you belong to, and would you choose them again today?
