The picture comes from a world that is gone.
A young woman goes into a household as a second wife, into a family already shaped by other people, with a place in it that is real and is also plainly second.
Strip the old customs away and the situation underneath is one most of us have lived.
You arrive after the rules were made, and you have to work out how to matter there.

The figure

The lower trigram is Lake, the youngest daughter, joyous and open.
The upper trigram is Thunder, the eldest son, arousing, movement.
The young girl is underneath and the older man above, and the tradition reads the arrangement as out of order, affection in a position where it has little say.
A lake stirred by thunder has no say in the weather, and the hexagram does not pretend otherwise.

Its pair in the sequence is Hexagram 53, Development, which is the same six lines turned upside down.
Development is the marriage done in its proper stages. The Marrying Maiden is the one that happened some other way, and now has to be lived.

When it comes up in a reading

When The Marrying Maiden comes up for a question, I read it as a hexagram about position.
You are in a role that is less than you would have chosen.
Second chair, junior partner, the new person in an old team, the step parent in a family with its own history.
The sense of the old text is a warning that pushing forward from this position brings trouble, and that nothing much is gained by force.

The teaching is about how to inhabit the position with dignity.
Resentment is the obvious response and it is the one that ruins everything.
The person who spends their energy on how unfair the arrangement is has none left for the work, and the work is where the influence lies.
I have watched people in second chair quietly shape a whole organisation once they stopped arguing about the chair.

There is also a message about knowing what you have signed up for.
If you take a position knowing it is second, and you accept the conditions, you can do a great deal within it.
If you take it telling yourself it will soon become first, you are setting up the bitterness in advance.

And remember the lake.
It is still joyous, even under the thunder.
The affection that got you into the situation is what makes it bearable and, in time, fruitful.

As a birth hexagram

If this is your birth hexagram, or if it keeps coming back to you, you know what it is to be second.
You have held the supporting role, the junior position, the second marriage, the job where you did the work and somebody else had the title.
You did not get to design the structure. You arrived into it and made what you could of where you stood.

The gift is effective work within limits.
You do not need ideal conditions to contribute, which puts you ahead of most people, who are still waiting for the conditions.
Working within a system as you find it, while nudging it from the inside, produces results a frontal assault never could.
You understand that not every arrangement can be perfect and that something good can still be made of an imperfect one.

The shadow is resentment.
The sense of having been passed over can curdle into a bitterness that poisons the very contribution you were placed to make.
It is the old picture of drinking the poison and waiting for the other person to die.
The mature carrier of The Marrying Maiden finds real meaning in the position, with no resignation in it, because they have discovered that second does not mean small.
Looked back on from later in life, the quiet shaping you did from the supporting chair changed more than the people in the front row ever noticed.

If a line moves

When you cast this hexagram and a line is moving, the position of that line tells you where you are in the matter.
The two lower lines are the beginning, the entry into the position, where the right move is modesty and doing the work in front of you.
The two middle lines are the heart of it, where the question is whether to wait for a better footing or to force one that is not yet there.
The two upper lines are the end, where the arrangement has run its course and the danger of going too far is a role that has become empty form, all ceremony and no substance.
The moving line changes to its opposite and gives you a second hexagram, the one the situation is heading toward.
The How to Cast a Hexagram page shows you how to find it.

Across the traditions

The Eight Trigrams page gives you Lake and Thunder on their own.
The Chinese Astrology section covers yin and yang, which is the whole tension in this figure, the yielding below and the moving above.
I do not have a tarot card I would put beside this one with any confidence, so I will leave that space empty and say so.

Where in your life are you in second place, and what are you doing with it?
