The lake has drained. This is the hexagram of being stuck with nothing to work with, and the book has more to say about it than you might think.

The figure

The lower trigram is Water, the middle son, the abyss, depth and danger. The upper is Lake, the youngest daughter, open and joyous. Put Water underneath Lake and the picture is a lake whose water has leaked away below it, leaving a dry basin where there should be something to drink.

The old name K'un is spelt the same as the Earth trigram in the lettering we use here, and they are two different words in Chinese. This one has nothing motherly about it.

Oppression is paired with Hexagram 48, The Well, which is this figure turned upside down. One is water gone from where it should be. The other is water found deep down and drawn up for everyone. I always read them together.

When it comes up in a reading

When Oppression comes up for a question, the plain answer is that you are in a hard place, and the book will not pretend otherwise. Resources are low. Options are few. Something outside you is pressing down and your effort, for the moment, is not moving it. You already knew this. The hexagram is confirming it so you can stop blaming yourself for it.

The first piece of advice is to hold your ground on the inside. When outer resources fail, the only resources left are inner ones, and this is the hexagram that tests whether you have any. Staying steady and refusing to become a smaller person because your circumstances have shrunk is a tall order. It is also the only thing in the situation still entirely in your hands.

The second piece is about talking. The old text says, in effect, that words will not be believed right now. When you are down, people do not hear you the same way, and explaining yourself tends to make it worse. Save your breath and let your conduct do the talking until the water comes back.

The third piece is about effort and outcome. Sometimes effort is not enough and the situation simply is what it is. Knowing when you are in that kind of season saves you from wearing yourself out on a wall that will not move. Spend less than you have, say less than you know, and keep your word to yourself about who you are, because for a while that word is the only thing that is yours.

As a birth hexagram

If this is your birth hexagram, or if it keeps coming back to you, you have known real constraint. Your life has included, or will include, a stretch where your capacity to act was limited by things outside you. Money, health, an institution, a system that did not have room for you. These stretches have shaped you whether you talk about them or not.

You also carry inner resources that do not depend on the weather outside. The drained lake taught you where the water really comes from. It also makes you very good company for someone else in their hard season, because you can sit with them without offering the false comfort that it will all refill by Tuesday. They can tell you have been there.

The gift is endurance with your character intact. You can carry what would break more fragile people, and your example quietly tells others it can be done.

The shadow is bitterness that sets like concrete, a hard season that becomes a permanent way of standing, braced against a pressure that lifted years ago. Not every oppression is for life. Part of the work is noticing when the water has started to come back, and letting yourself believe it.

The rest of the work is to carry weight without being hardened by it. At maturity the Oppression person has come through real hardship with their integrity whole. These are the elders whose counsel carries weight because of what they have actually lived, and whose presence tells the person in front of them that there is a far side.

If a line moves

When you cast Oppression with a moving line, its position tells you where the hard season stands. A line moving low in the figure is the beginning of the matter, the first sinking and the danger of giving up before the test has started. A line moving in the middle is the heart of it, the full weight of the pressure, where steadiness and patience are everything. A line moving high is the end of the matter, where the constraint is loosening and the risk is staying braced against something that has already gone. Change the moving line to its opposite and you have the second hexagram, where the situation is heading. The How to Cast a Hexagram page shows the step with a worked example.

Across the traditions

The Eight Trigrams page gives Water and Lake their own sections and shows how a pair of trigrams is read. The Chinese Astrology section covers yin and yang, the two forces every line here is built from. In the tarot, my own association for Oppression is the Five of Pentacles, two figures in the snow outside a lit window, and the question of what they still have that the cold cannot take. Take that as my pairing and nothing stronger.

When the outside stopped giving, what did you find you still had?
