Five solid lines and one broken one left at the top. The old thing is almost gone. This is the hexagram of saying so.

The figure

The lower trigram is Heaven, the father, creative and strong. The upper is Lake, the youngest daughter, open and joyous. The picture is water risen all the way into the sky, a lake held overhead, and anyone who has stood under a Perth sky in late summer knows the feeling. The air is tight. The rain is coming and the only question is when.

Five strong lines push up from the bottom and one weak line sits at the top, the last of whatever was there before. Breakthrough is the moment that line gives way. The rain falls and the air clears.

Breakthrough is paired with Hexagram 44, Coming to Meet, which is this figure turned upside down, with the single broken line at the bottom. One is the old thing leaving. The other is a new thing arriving.

When it comes up in a reading

When Breakthrough comes up for a question, something in the situation has been tolerated too long and the time to name it has arrived. There is a bit of rot somewhere. Everyone can smell it. Nobody has said so.

The book's advice is to say so, out loud, in the open, to the people who matter, with no muttering in corners. Half a breakthrough is worse than none, because it alerts the problem without removing it.

The book is just as firm about how. Breakthrough done in anger becomes a brawl, and a brawl changes nothing except who is bleeding. The strong lines in this figure win by being clear and steady, by stating what is true and standing on it. If you find yourself wanting to hurt someone with the truth, you are not ready to tell it yet. Wait a day.

There is a second warning tucked in here. The person who clears the rot has to be clean themselves. It is no good calling out someone else's failing while quietly carrying the same one. So decide what needs saying, check your own motives twice, then say it plainly, once, to the right people, and let the weather do the rest.

As a birth hexagram

If this is your birth hexagram, or if it keeps coming back to you, you are the one who names what others will not. When something in a room is wrong, you say so, and you have been doing it since you were small. You can see when the surface harmony is hiding real dysfunction, and once you have seen it you find it very hard to pretend you have not. The seeing leads to the saying. You are willing to pay for it too. Breakthrough costs friendships, comfort, sometimes a job, and you pay because living inside something you know is rotten costs more.

In practice you may be the one who speaks up at work when nobody else will, or the plain speaking friend in a family that prefers silence. You are built for the decisive moment more than the slow improvement, and you should pick your colleagues accordingly.

The gift is the courage to call out what others collude in ignoring. Every family, workplace and community needs one of you, and most are quietly grateful even when they do not say so.

The shadow is making a habit of it. The breakthrough capacity, left without a governor, turns into a person who is always blowing something up, who mistakes every irritation for corruption and every disagreement for a principle. A personal grievance dressed up as a crusade is the particular trap here, and it fools the person carrying it more easily than anyone else.

The work is to tell the difference. Is this rot, or is this just something you do not like? Sit with that before you act. At maturity the Breakthrough person has named what needed naming when it mattered and left the rest alone, and the health that followed adds up across a life to a real contribution to every group you were part of.

If a line moves

When you cast Breakthrough with a moving line, its position tells you where the matter stands. A line moving low in the figure is the beginning, the first urge to act and whether your footing is sure yet. A line moving in the middle is the heart of it, the pressure at its height, where steadiness and clear speech matter most. A line moving high is the end of the matter, the last of the old thing giving way, and the warning not to gloat once it has gone. Change the moving line to its opposite and you have the second hexagram, where the situation is heading. The How to Cast a Hexagram page shows the step with a worked example.

Across the traditions

The Eight Trigrams page gives Heaven and Lake their own sections and shows how a pair of trigrams is read. The Chinese Astrology section covers yin and yang, the two forces every line here is built from. In the tarot, my own association for Breakthrough is the Ace of Swords, the single clean blade held up to the light, the truth said once and said plainly. Take that as my pairing and nothing stronger.

What is the thing everyone around you knows and nobody has said?
