Hate is a poison you drink

Someone hurt you once. Maybe badly, and maybe they never even said sorry. And a part of you has held it against them ever since.

I understand that completely.

But after forty years of this work, here is what I know.

Hating someone is like taking poison and hoping the other person gets sick.

They are off living their life. They may not even remember the day that still keeps you awake at night. And you are the one swallowing the poison, dose after dose, year after year.

Holding hate feels like power. It feels like a way of making them pay. What it really does is tie you to the very person you want to be free of.

Forgiveness gets misread as letting them off the hook. It is nothing of the sort. It is you setting the poison down and walking on. It is deciding they do not get to keep renting space in your head for nothing.

You do it for you, never for them.

This week the sky is stirring up old feelings for a lot of us. Mercury is still walking backwards, and the past keeps knocking on the door. So it is a good week to ask the hard question.

Who are you still drinking poison over?

And are you ready to put the glass down?
