Mars Lines
Mars is the planet of drive, courage, heat and the fight.
Wherever a Mars line crosses the map, the place turns up your energy and your temper together, and you do not get to choose only one of them.
In my experience the Mars lines are the most demanding of the seven, and the most useful when you have something hard to do. They are places for action. They are poor places for a quiet life.
The Ascendant line
Your Mars Ascendant line is where Mars was rising at the moment you were born.
Near this line you come across as stronger than you do at home. People read you as capable, direct and not easily pushed around. You move faster, speak more plainly and put your hand up for things you would have thought twice about elsewhere. The body feels more alive here too.
The gift is confidence. Competitive work, sport, anything that needs nerve, all of it goes better when you are not second guessing yourself, and on this line you mostly are not.
The challenge is that the same heat burns people. You can come across as aggressive when you only meant to be clear. Disagreement starts to feel like a fight you have to win. A short temper gets shorter, and a place with a lot of Mars in the air can draw trouble towards someone who walks around looking for it. I have watched gentle people get sharp on a Mars line.
Use this place for starting something that needs courage. A business launch, a competition, a stretch of serious physical training, a season when you have to stand up for yourself. Then find a physical outlet every day, because if you do not give the energy somewhere to go it will pick somewhere itself.
The Descendant line
Your Mars Descendant line is where Mars was setting when you were born, and the Descendant is about the people you draw to you.
Near this line you meet strong people. Partners, business partners and friends tend to be driven, physical, confident and quite sure of what they want. Relationships that begin here start hot. There is chemistry and challenge from the first conversation.
The gift is an equal. You are matched with people who do not fold, who keep their own lives and their own opinions, and who push you to go harder at your own goals.
The challenge is that two strong wills in one room will clash, and on this line the clashes get loud. Power struggles are common. Competition creeps into what should be cooperation. Some people drawn here mistake intensity for love and put up with behaviour they would never accept in a calmer place, and old family patterns of conflict have a way of walking back in through a partner.
Use this place to deepen a partnership that already has respect in it, or to work on conflict with somebody skilled helping you. Choose people whose strength comes with maturity. The whole point of this line is partnership between equals, and that takes two grown ups.
The Midheaven line
Your Mars Midheaven line is where Mars was directly overhead when you were born, and the Midheaven is career, public life and what you build in the world.
Near this line your working life gets ambitious. You are known for drive, for refusing to take no for an answer and for doing the hard thing other people avoid. You advance quickly in competitive fields because you are willing to compete. The work that pulls at you here is work with a winner in it: your own business, sales, sport, the trades, anywhere results speak louder than meetings.
The gift is momentum. People with the same hunger gather around you, and money follows effort more directly than it does in gentler places.
The challenge is the cost of all that pushing. Ambition on a Mars line can turn ruthless and leave a trail of damaged working relationships behind it. Visible drive stirs envy and draws competitors who want to take you down. Burnout is the quiet one. You can work yourself into the ground here and call it success until your health says otherwise.
Use this place to launch the business, enter the competitive field or push through a stretch of hard professional building. Pick the fights worth having and let the rest go. Build the career on what you have made and delivered, and keep one eye on the people and the body that have to carry you home afterwards.
The IC line
Your Mars IC line is where Mars was directly underfoot when you were born, and the IC is home, family, roots and private life.
Near this line the home gets heat in it. Family members say what they think and arguments are out in the open. You feel your own strength more inside your four walls here, and you find yourself standing up to people you used to appease.
The gift is independence. This is the line where people stop tolerating control, manipulation or quiet bullying from relatives and set boundaries that stick. Your home becomes your own, and the family patterns that kept you small get seen clearly, often for the first time.
The challenge is that the same fire can set the house alight. You can become combative over things that did not need a battle. Old family conflict repeats itself with you now in the role you once feared. Temper is harder to hold at home than anywhere else, and if there is a history of aggression or abuse in the family, this line brings it up and asks you to deal with it, which is work for a good therapist as well as an astrologer.
Use this place to face a family matter that has been avoided too long, to claim your independence, to set the boundaries and to make a home that is yours. Work hard physically while you do it. Protect the house. Do not become the storm in it.
How I read these lines
I never read a Mars line on its own. The first question is how Mars sits in your birth chart. A well placed Mars, in a sign it likes with clean aspects, makes these lines bracing and productive. A hard pressed Mars, square Saturn or Pluto say, makes the same lines heavy going, and I will tell you so. The Mars page in The Planets covers the planet itself, and the Birth Chart page covers the four angles the lines come from.
The second question is the whole map. A Mars line with a Jupiter line crossing it nearby reads very differently from a Mars line running alone, and I read the two or three nearest lines to a place together.
The line people ask me about most is the Midheaven. Someone is weighing a move for work and wants to know if the place will push their career. Mars usually will. The question I hand back is what it will cost, and whether this is the season of your life for that kind of push. The Descendant is a close second, from someone who keeps meeting the same fiery type in the same city.
Across the traditions
Mars has its own page in The Planets, where I walk it through the twelve signs, and the Transits page covers what it does when it passes over your chart in time.
In Vedic astrology the same planet is Mangala, also called Kuja, a fierce protector whose place in a chart is weighed with great care, and The Grahas page in the Vedic Astrology section gives that view.
