The Ascendant line

Your Mercury Ascendant line runs through the places where Mercury was rising at your birth.
Here your mind sits on the surface of you.
You come across as sharp, curious and quick, people read you as intelligent before you have said much, and conversations find you.
You seem younger and livelier, your face moves more, and you discover that people listen to what you say and want more of it.
Learning speeds up. New skills, new systems and new languages go in faster than they do at home.

The gift is clear speech and a quick grasp, which favours writing, speaking, teaching and any work that depends on explaining things well.
Networking is easy because talk is easy.
The challenge is a mind with the handbrake off.
It looks like this: talking too much, sharing too much too soon, using words to avoid feeling, restlessness, scattered attention, knowing a little about everything and a lot about nothing, and anxiety that shows up as racing thoughts when you are trying to sleep.

Use this place to start a writing project, to speak in public, to teach, to study something hard, or to negotiate something that matters.
The practice is to point the extra mental energy at one deep thing, because twenty shallow ones will offer themselves daily, and to have something that calms the nervous system: meditation, a notebook, time outside with the phone left behind.

The Descendant line

Your Mercury Descendant line runs through the places where Mercury was setting when you were born.
Here Mercury shows up in the people you meet.
You draw talkers, thinkers, readers and arguers, people who love a good discussion and who are often experts in something, whether or not anyone gave them a certificate for it.
Relationships here begin in the head: a conversation that will not end, a shared interest, the pleasure of being understood.

The gift is partnership with real mental compatibility in it, people who can explain themselves clearly enough that you feel understood, who widen your thinking, and with whom a misunderstanding gets sorted out before it has time to fester.
Joint projects built on shared ideas go well here.
The challenge is that a relationship can stay in the head for years.
Watch for endless talk with no resolution, clever sparring that leaves wounds, people who are brilliant company and emotionally unavailable, and partnerships where ideas crowd out presence.
I have met couples who could debate anything and had long stopped reaching for each other.

Use this place for negotiation, for the important relationship conversation you have been putting off, for a joint intellectual project, or for improving how you and someone you love talk to each other.
Look for people who want to grow past the clever conversation into something with a heartbeat.
The Mercury Descendant line asks you to use your words to understand the person in front of you.

The Midheaven line

Your Mercury Midheaven line is the line of longitude where Mercury stood directly overhead at your birth.
Here your mind goes public.
Your career attaches itself to how you think, speak and explain, and your reputation rests on clarity, productivity and the knack of taking something complicated and making it plain.
Opportunities multiply because a good mind travels well between industries.

The gift is real for writing, journalism, teaching, information technology, consulting, public relations and any trade where being understood is the product.
You advance because people trust your thinking, you learn new systems before your colleagues have finished complaining about them, and leadership comes to you through plain competence.
The challenge is a cool one.
You can value being right over being liked, so your working relationships stay polite and shallow.
The job can swallow you, worry about looking clever can freeze you, and the human side of leading people can feel like a distraction from the interesting part.

Use this place to launch a career built on words or ideas, to begin a consulting practice, to learn an advanced skill, or to become the person in your field that other people ring when they are stuck.
Choose work that holds your interest for its own sake, and spend some of the mental energy on the people around you.
A Mercury Midheaven place will make you the expert, and being a good colleague is the part you have to do yourself.

The IC line

Your Mercury IC line is the line of longitude opposite your Midheaven line, where Mercury was directly underfoot when you were born.
Here the mind goes home.
Family conversation sharpens, old family confusions start to make sense, and you can see where your way of thinking came from, who taught you to argue and who taught you to stay quiet.
The house itself gets better organised, with systems for everything, and the kitchen table becomes a place for ideas.

The gift is understanding your parents and siblings through how they think, and understanding yourself the same way, including the wounds around learning and cleverness that a family hands down without meaning to.
Practical household matters get handled well, and a home full of books and talk suits you here.
The challenge is a home that never goes quiet.
It looks like this: discussion where feeling was needed, siblings competing on brains, intelligence used as a weapon in a family argument, and a house so full of stimulation that nobody ever simply sits with anyone.

Use this place for the big family conversation, for clearing up a misunderstanding that has run for years, or for understanding the thinking patterns you inherited and choosing which to keep.
Leave room for feelings that have no clever words attached.
Home needs some silence in it, even for a Mercury person, and in these places you will have to make the silence on purpose.

How I read these lines

A Mercury line follows the Mercury in your birth chart.
A settled Mercury, well aspected and in a sign it likes, gives lines that are bright and useful; a Mercury under pressure, say square Mars or retrograde and conjunct Saturn, gives lines where the talk runs ahead of the thought, and the reading says so.
I read the nearest lines against the whole chart, Mercury's sign, house and aspects, and I give the distance to the line in kilometres.
The line people ask me about most is the Midheaven, usually when a job that involves writing or speaking has turned up somewhere far away.
The one I watch for without being asked is the Ascendant, because a person who already lives in their head rarely needs a place that makes the head louder.

Across the traditions

Mercury has its own page in The Planets, which carries it through the twelve signs and its rulership of Gemini and Virgo, and The Magician in The 78 Cards is its card.
The Grahas page in the Vedic Astrology section gives the sidereal view of Mercury as Budha.

Where in the world did you last find yourself talking to strangers as if you had known them for years?
