Hexagram 45, Gathering Together
Hexagram 45 is Gathering Together, called Ts'ui in the old books, Lake over Earth. From the bottom the lines run broken, broken, broken, solid, solid, broken.
Water collects where the ground is lowest. People collect where someone has made room for them.
The figure
The lower trigram is Earth, the mother, receptive and yielding. The upper is Lake, the youngest daughter, open and joyous. The picture is a lake resting on the earth, water that has run down from everywhere and pooled in one place because the ground there was shaped to hold it. A lake sits low, holds still, and the water arrives on its own. Groups of people form the same way, around a person or a purpose that has made a place where others can settle. The two strong lines near the top are that centre, and the yielding lines around them are everyone who has come.
Gathering Together is paired with Hexagram 46, Pushing Upward, which is this figure turned upside down. One is many coming together in one place. The other is one thing growing steadily up from the ground.
When it comes up in a reading
When Gathering Together comes up for a question, people are coming together around whatever you are asking about, or they should be. A team, a family, a circle of friends, a community. The matter cannot be done alone and the book is telling you so.
The first piece of advice is about the centre. A gathering needs something to gather around, a purpose or a person everyone present can see. Without that you have a crowd, and a crowd goes home when it gets cold. So if you are the one bringing people together, be clear about why and say it out loud. People will follow a reason a long way.
The second piece is about whoever is in the middle of the group, wanted or not. The book asks for sincerity and a steady hand. People gather around someone who is what they appear to be. The moment the centre starts performing, the water drains away, and it drains quietly, so you may not notice until the lake is a puddle.
The third piece is a dry one, and I like it for that. Where many people gather, trouble gathers too. Arguments start, things go missing, feelings get hurt in the crush. The old text says, in effect, to keep your tools in order and expect the unexpected. So plan for the friction as well as the warmth, and keep a first aid kit for feelings as well as fingers.
As a birth hexagram
If this is your birth hexagram, or if it keeps coming back to you, you gather people. Communities form, meetings get called, groups come together, and when people look for who started it, the trail leads back to you. You are the low ground the water runs to.
You carry real coordinating ability. Logistics, scheduling, the hundred small tasks of getting a group of humans into one place at one time, you do these when nobody else will. You also understand how groups actually work, what frays them and what holds them, and nobody taught you that. In practice you may found things, run the committee, host the dinners, or simply keep the circle of friends in touch when everyone else has drifted. This work is mostly unthanked and entirely essential.
The gift is the making and keeping of community. In a time when people are more scattered than ever, the ability to bring them into a room and keep them there is rare.
The shadow is exhaustion. The gift of gathering can turn into an inability to say no to one more gathering, until the person who makes the room has no room left for themselves. The mature version has learned a rhythm, times to host and times to be hosted, and treats the second as seriously as the first.
The work is to make sure what you gather is worth gathering for, because gathering without a purpose becomes social machinery, busy and hollow. At maturity the Gathering Together person has built real communities across a life, and this quiet work turns out to be the foundation everything else in a society stands on.
If a line moves
When you cast Gathering Together with a moving line, its position tells you where the group stands. A line moving low in the figure is the beginning of the matter, the first people arriving and the uncertainty about whether to join. A line moving in the middle is the heart of it, the centre forming and whether it is sincere enough to hold. A line moving high is the end of the matter, often the one left on the edge of a group already formed, and what it costs to stay outside. Change the moving line to its opposite and you have the second hexagram, where the situation is heading. The How to Cast a Hexagram page shows the step with a worked example.
Across the traditions
The Eight Trigrams page gives Earth and Lake their own sections and shows how a pair of trigrams is read. The Chinese Astrology section covers yin and yang, the two forces every line here is built from. In the tarot, my own association for Gathering Together is the Three of Cups, three people with their cups raised, the picture of a gathering that has a reason. Take that as my pairing and nothing stronger.
Who gathers your people, and when did you last thank them for it?
