Most people have never heard of it. Most people, once they hear which one is theirs, go quiet for a moment and then say something like, well, that explains a bit.

How the phase is found

The phase is set by the angle between the Sun and the Moon at the moment of birth, measured from the Sun forward through the zodiac to the Moon. If the Moon is within 45 degrees ahead of the Sun you were born under a New Moon. From 45 to 90 is the Waxing Crescent. From 90 to 135 is the First Quarter. From 135 to 180 is the Waxing Gibbous. From 180 to 225 is the Full Moon. From 225 to 270 is the Waning Gibbous, which some books call the Disseminating Moon. From 270 to 315 is the Last Quarter. From 315 round to 360 is the Waning Crescent, also called the Balsamic Moon.

You need a date and a place to find it, and a birth time helps, because the Moon moves about half a degree an hour and a birth near one of those boundaries can tip either way. If you were born within a few degrees of a boundary I read both phases and tell you so.

A different thing from your Moon sign

Your Moon sign is which of the twelve signs the Moon was sitting in, and it describes what you need so as to feel safe and fed. The Moon in the Signs page covers that. Your Moon phase is a different thing. It is about where the Moon was in its monthly cycle, growing or shrinking, dark or lit, and it describes the rhythm you live by, the way you begin things and end them.

The two sit side by side in a chart and they say different things. A Full Moon person with a Pisces Moon and a Full Moon person with a Capricorn Moon share the same visibility and the same pull between opposites, and they feed themselves in very different ways.

Here are the eight, in order.

New Moon

You were born in the dark, with the Sun and Moon close together, and you carry beginnings with you. Your life keeps starting over, and that is how you were made. You feel yourself as someone still becoming rather than someone finished.

Your feelings run private. You often do not know what you felt until a day or two later, so you can look composed when you are deeply moved. You need quiet to work yourself out, and you tend to know things before you can say how.

The work is trusting the dark. Seeds do not show results for weeks, and the New Moon shadow is walking away from a planting before anything has come up. Stay through the dark part. The people who learn that build a life out of many well tended starts.

Waxing Crescent

The first sliver has appeared. You were born with evidence that growth happens, and it gives you a hopeful determination that the New Moon person has to work for.

There is a yearning in you. You can sense what is possible and you reach for it, and being held back stings you more than it stings most people. You need room. Partners who try to keep you small eventually lose you, and the right ones become part of the soil you grow in.

The work is protecting tender growth through bad weather. The shadow is giving up on something just because it got hard, or forcing it faster than it can go and stunting it. In my experience the Waxing Crescent life is a long story of actually becoming, decade by decade.

First Quarter

Half lit, Sun and Moon at right angles, and the first real resistance of the cycle. You were born into friction and you are good at it. You meet life as a challenge rather than a situation to accept, and when you decide to make something happen you push.

Your feelings want to move. Sitting with an emotion without doing anything about it feels wrong to you. In relationships you work rather than coast, and you may stir things when they go too quiet, just to keep them alive.

The gift is getting through obstacles that stop other people, and getting stuck things moving again. The work is telling necessary struggle from the fight you picked because fighting is what you know. Not everything needs a push, and not everyone moves at your pace.

Waxing Gibbous

More than half lit and still filling, this is the refining phase, and you were born to polish. You make the fiftieth small adjustment nobody else would bother with, and it usually matters.

You analyse your own feelings. You turn them over afterwards and ask what they meant. There is often a low hum of dissatisfaction in you, the sense that something is nearly right but not quite, and it is useful when it is pointed at something and corrosive when it is pointed at everything.

In relationships you pay attention and you adjust, which lands as care or as criticism depending on how you deliver it. The seventh year of your marriage may well be better than the first. The work is knowing when ready is ready. Perfectionism that never finishes is the shadow here.

Full Moon

Sun and Moon directly opposite, the whole face lit. You were born visible. People notice you whether you want them to or not, and your feelings show on you like weather on a hill.

You see in opposites. The pull between work and home, between two loyalties, between what you want and what someone you love wants, lands on you harder than it lands on other phases, and your life keeps asking you to hold both sides without dropping either. You may well pick partners who are your opposite in some plain way.

Many Full Moon people feel the actual Full Moon each month, sleep badly, run hot. The work is learning to retreat sometimes, even against your nature. Performance that never rests is the shadow, and so is the outburst at the peak.

Waning Gibbous

The peak has passed and the light is still strong. Some books call this the Disseminating Moon, and the word fits. You were born to give out what has been gathered, to teach, to pass things on. You tend to end up doing that whether you planned to or not.

You are reflective by nature, more interested in what an experience meant than in chasing the next one, and your default is generosity. You mentor without needing to be thanked for it.

The shadow is the lecture, the teaching that stopped listening some time ago, and nostalgia for a peak you keep looking back at. The work is matching what you give to what the other person can actually take in. Your later years tend to matter more than your earlier ones.

Last Quarter

Half lit again, the other half, and the cycle is turning over its assumptions. You were born a questioner. You do not accept a thing because it was set up that way, and if something is not working you will say so.

Hypocrisy bothers you. Forms that have lost their meaning, institutions that stopped serving anyone, beliefs that were true once and are not now, you find it hard to leave these alone. In relationships you examine out loud, which some partners find exhausting and others find a relief.

The gift is reform, and showing people how to let go of something consciously instead of clinging past the end. The work is telling the critique worth making from the one that is just dissatisfaction wearing a suit, and building something after you have pulled the old thing down.

Waning Crescent

The last sliver before the dark. The old books call this the Balsamic Moon, and the people born under it often seem older than their years from childhood on. You understand that things pass, and you are good at endings in a culture that does them badly.

You are a natural completer. The project that needs its last chapter, the relationship that needs a proper close, the family matter nobody else will finish, these find you. Your counsel, when you give it, comes from somewhere deep.

The work is staying present inside your completion nature. The shadow is living in the aftermath, or finding too much comfort in endings and not enough in the middle. What you release makes room, and what you understand becomes the seed for the next New Moon, often without anyone seeing you do it.

Finding yours

Work out your phase, read the section, and then read the one either side of it, because a birth near a boundary carries some of both. Notice what fits and what does not. You are the one living it, so you are the one who knows.

Which half of the cycle were you born in, the growing half or the fading half? I have found that question alone tells people something they recognise.
